Ontario’s Slow Down, Move Over law requires drivers to slow down, proceed with caution, and move over into another lane when approaching stopped emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights.
Why It Matters
• Worker Safety: Roadside and tow operators face high risks of struck-by-vehicle incidents while helping stranded drivers.
• Enforcement: Police continue to crack down on drivers ignoring these rules, with the Ontario Provincial Police issuing hundreds of charges for failure to move over.
What the Law Requires

• Move Over: If the road has two or more lanes, change lanes away from the stopped vehicle if it is safe to do so.
