Last Thursday, on World Sight Day, Young Driver was delighted to support the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB) and Rotherham Sight & Sound (RSS) at its annual Blind Drive event at Sheffield Utilita Arena.
The event gave blind, visually impaired and sighted participants the opportunity to experience driving in a safe, controlled environment, supported by our qualified driving instructors.
Tony, who is visually impaired, had never driven before. Not only did he enjoy his first experience behind the wheel, but he was also named the best driver on the day, at the age of 79!
Another remarkable story was that of David White, a former professional lorry driver who experienced significant sight loss following a stroke and was told he could no longer drive.
David has since become an enthusiastic supporter of SRSB and was the event's highest fundraiser for the second consecutive year, raising an incredible ยฃ1,420.
In total, 28 people took part, raising over ยฃ5,000 after costs for SRSB, with the final figure potentially reaching ยฃ5,500.
A huge thank you to our Young Driver instructors, Carmen and Sara, who helped make the day possible and received some wonderful feedback from the organisers.
And congratulations to Steve Loane and everyone at SRSB for organising such a successful event ๐
