We often see comments online about “biodegradable wiring” on the R129, so we wanted to shed some light on this widely misunderstood issue. ⚡️

In reality, only around 25-30% of R129s produced were affected by this manufacturing blunder - and even then, it is absolutely not a death sentence for the car.

For most affected models, it is a straightforward, one-time fix that properly future-proofs the car. ✅

Harry takes out a customers 1998 SL 60 AMG and offers some thoughts and buyers advice. This beautiful example with just 26k miles has been with us primarily for suspension work amongst other jobs. This is a creme de la creme genuine AMG R129 in right hand drive, one of the most sought after and prized R129 SLs available, outside of the unicorns 🦄

This 1995 SL 500 with genuine factory fitted Gen 1 AMG bodystyling came to us for some recommission work having been stood for several years. Wiring renewal and a new throttle body were key parts of the equation, now running beautifully.

Incredibly rare front bumper now repaired, the owner will be fitting its original 3 piece AMG wheels for summer usage.

Not a concours car, and somewhat of a high mileage hero at approx. 170k miles, but plenty of life left yet for this old girl.

A common culprit for a top end tick like this on M119 powered vehicles is the hydraulic tappet oil feeders (the plastic type). These feed tubes can get blocked with oil sludge or sometimes fail altogether, starving the cam area of proper lubrication and creating that unmistakable tapping noise. In this case, one had blown apart - so we replaced the failed tube, cleaned the rest, renewed the valve cover seals, irradicating the noise and restoring optimal lubrication.

Many M119 owners swap these out to the superior early aluminium type, a solid upgrade if you encounter this problem.
