Peak ED30 💥

Before you even read this post, just take a minute to check out the pictures of Humzuh's ED30 GTI 👀

Here is a guy who hunted out the best spec and uber low miles car just that it was super clean. He then took it all to bits and made it even cleaner!

Theres not many people would go to the extent of buying all new plastic under body panels, but he just couldnt bring himself to fit the old ones back up after such an amazing restoration.

The best bit...?

He uses the car too! Maybes not over winter, but once the suns out - the cars out. What a guy.

We've had the car up from the Midlands for a nice stopover to get the tuning work done. He has managed to raise the bar of the car even further by upgrading the hardware to Stg2+ spec so booked in with us for the carbon clean / injector service along with custom tuning.

The 30k mile engine was a dream to work on, and the injectors, no surprise tested perfect. On to the dyno where Humzuh looked on with immense trepidation. His baby was having its neck rung (in a professional and courteous manner of course) and let's just say he was a tad nervous. It didnt help that he got talking to the guy from the previous tuning job where it didnt go so well.

He honestly had nothing to worry about though as the car performed flawlessly. Its still got the stock K04 turbo so great effort was taken to skirt around the surge and achieve as much torque as we could. It was a really healthy setup and the numbers reflect this.

With such a mountain of torque to keep under control we linearised the throttle, and complemented it with a smooth ramp up of cam timing. Even in the 27 degree heat, his intercooler never crept above 30 degrees and the rate of rise under load was basically nothing. No suprise the ignition timing would happily advance to 20 degrees with no drama. With the traction control modified to allow the torque to shine this car just picks up and pulls relentlessly. Big grins all round thats for sure!

This job couldnt have went better, and the car drove absolutely sublime. It wouldnt have been anywhere near as good as this when VW signed it off, so it has been a treat to sign off such an amazing build with the DT sauce.

Enjoy it pal, what an absolute corker 👌

Middleman!

Despite living 2.5hrs away, this perculiar coloured S3 is very well known around here. We've had it up at DT for the TFSI regular jobs over a few different visits. It even plagued us as being the only car that we have fitted a genhine coolant regulator to, which didnt work. A replacement sorted it, but you dont forget them hassles thats for sure...

This time it has been up for some more of the same TFSI love which included a carbon clean / injector service and Stage 1/2 ish tuning.

Its not exactly full Stage 2, but has some mods so isnt Stage 1 either. Its very much a middleman, and because of that its no surprise that the custom tuning yielded very middle of the road kind of figures.

Despite this, it still did very well with obvious flow restrictions from the exhaust and intercooler being the limiting factors.

I tell you what though - a healthy 8P S3 is still a glorious drive all these years later, so with a bit more poke it is even better. Sure its not full phat Stg2+ or even road gobbling hybrid this or that. But theres a lot to be said for the smiles per miles thats on tap in such a nice example.

Cheers for making the trip up again Jack, it was a pleasure as always.

FAN-tastic!

When we tuned Paul's red Mk7 GTI our over riding thoughts about it were just how clean it was!

Fast forward a little bit and we now had the pleasure of working on his recently converted Mk2 GTI - 1.8T 😎

The Mk2 is also at that same impressively high standard... no surprise.

This one came with a few niggles though which is no real surprise for converted cars. There is always a build issue or 2 which can sometimes leave the owner stumped.

Thats where we can help out though. 👍

The issues with Paul's car were easy enough to identify -

➡️ Rough Running
This was due to his K04 setup being ran by an ECU with K03 Mk4 Golf software. Calibration mismatched couldnt be accounted for because his lambda probe was duff. A new probe and a proper base map had the motor purring.

➡️ Over heating
The problem here was that his radiator fan was configured to pull, and it simply couldnt pull airflow through the radiator as the fan is mounted off the core. When the polarity of the fan was swapped it pushed and we had it blowing hard, but yet it still couldnt cool the car. This was again down to how the fan was mounted away from the rad. The force of the fan was choosing the path of least resistance, out the side of the housing and not through the radiator for heat transfer. A very simple but very commonly overlooked part of the conversion world. What is good though is that his water pump was pumping, the coolant system was plumbed correctly and some testing with our newly refurbished dyno fan confirmed that with some airflow through the radiator the car cooled perfect 👌

With them niggles out of the way it was tuning time, and in this area the car ran faultless. It took very little effort to get the K04 boost coming in smooth before tapering off and the ignition timing ramping up to the low 20degs 💥

It performed very well which is often the case when the Stg2 mods are good on converted cars. It even suprised us how smooth the torque curve ended up. We also tested his fuel pressure under load which is also a common probelm with converted cars. His was perfect.

After that its the normal playing with throttle and torque control during driving which finishes the job and gets the car ready to return to Paul again.

Overall - an absolutely superb build with a great outcome. It just needed a bit of specialist help to get it over the line, and thats where we come in 😁

Cheers Paul, enjoy it pal
