This car had a sloppy gear change in the lower gears when cold, the owner had the gearbox serviced elsewhere and it got even worse.
Gearbox servicing is not a magical cure for issues, however it definitely makes the gearbox smoother if it is only due to poor/dirty fluid.
The reason in this case for was because of dirty fluids and also the gearbox was circa 1.7 litres down on fluid which registered on our machine.
As you can see from the before and after, the standard gearbox service carried out has little effect on overall colour of the oil which is still heavily contaminated, this because only around 60% of the oil is changed using this method.
The owner booked in with us for a dynamic service which uses our LIQUI MOLY machine and fluid, with ZF parts, you can see all the oil has been exchanged, and even after just 24 hours the customer is extremely happy with the outcome, which hopefully will continue to improve even more over time as the gearbox learns.
Our dynamic service is our premium service, we carry out these procedures along with standard ZF services multiple times a day, all year round. Everyone thinks this job is easy however there is a lot to go wrong and with misunderstanding how the gearbox works, your fluid level can be very wrong, especially if you have an inline thermostat like many of the later BMW’s have.
ZF gearboxes should be serviced every circa 60k miles to keep them running perfectly.
