This customer came to us with complaints of a clunk when selecting reverse and the gearbox skipping gears. With just 28,### miles on the clock, the vehicle hadn’t yet reached the recommended service interval for a DSG oil and filter change.
As part of our initial diagnosis, we drained the DSG oil to inspect its condition. Thankfully, there were no obvious signs of contamination or excessive debris, so we continued with further diagnostics.
We then identified a faulty mechatronic unit, which was causing the loss of the even-numbered gears and resulting in the customer’s symptoms.
Once the new mechatronic unit was fitted, we completed the repair with fresh genuine DSG oil and a new filter before carrying out the required adaptations and testing to ensure everything was operating as it should.
DSG gearboxes are incredibly advanced and precise systems. While this fault wasn’t caused by overdue servicing, keeping on top of the recommended DSG oil and filter changes—or even carrying them out slightly earlier—can help maintain long-term reliability and reduce the risk of costly repairs.
