While the bass fishing might particularly good this year we don't like to get carried away chasing them all of the time. They have often been so easy we could rattle out out quota before doing some proper fishing. I'm far from a one trick pony and enjoy exploring the variety sea fishing can offer. We wouldn't have experienced the big catches of hounds, spurs and tope this year if going round in circles all day chucking metal and rubber around.
The thames tope can be hard work at the best of times but rewarding when it goes right. The average sizes are 35-45lb here. We don't often see the big numbers of pack tope but there's a very real possibility that the next fish could be over 70lb. The fish have been spread out this year. It makes them hard to dial in on but they have still been there. As always we saw lots of good fish caught and others lost but the ones that get away make for a good story. I'm just about finished for tope now although one or two might show in places. My main target offshore from now until December will be the bass on lures and lives, at anchor and on the drift. As I have done for over 20 years, as my dad did for many years before me and the great Essex skippers were long before I was a glint in dad's eye. I won't pretend it's anything new but I will continue to do it.
