🔐🚤 Canal Locks Explained! 🚤🔐

One of the most fascinating parts of a canal boat holiday is learning how locks work.

A lock is simply a chamber with gates at either end that allows boats to move up or down between different water levels. By filling or emptying the lock with water, your boat is gently raised or lowered to the next section of canal. 💧⬆️⬇️

Did you know there are several different types of locks across the UK waterways?

🔹 Single (Narrow) Locks
The most common type of lock. Designed for a standard 7ft-wide narrowboat, they're straightforward to use and feature a single gate at each end.

🔹 Broad Locks
Twice the width of a narrow lock, broad locks can fit two narrowboats side-by-side or one widebeam boat.

🔹 Stop Locks
Originally built to control water flow between rival canal companies, stop locks are now rare. You can still spot examples at places like Kings Norton and Worcester Bar in Birmingham.

🔹 Guillotine Locks
These unusual locks have gates that lift vertically, much like a guillotine blade. They're more commonly found on river navigations than canals and always attract attention from passing boaters!

🔹 Automated & Lock-Keeper Operated Locks
Some locks are operated by boaters, while others are managed by lock keepers or automated systems that do the hard work for you.
