You've heard the sayings "happy as a pig in s #!t " and "sweating like a pig"
So heres the facts and the reason why the weather we are currently having is giving us extra work .
So pigs are very clean animals and like to keep their sleeping , food and toilet areas separate, pigs kept indoors will lay in the toilet area when its hot to cool down ,they don't like this but they do not sweat or pant so they can not regulate their body temperature, they have little choice but to lay in these areas so that they can regulate their temperature.
Our pigs live outdoors so its easy for them to keep their areas separate, they go outside of their arks or sheds to go toilet their indoor area being their bedroom .
They will dig a wallow ,looking for cool ground/mud to lay in ,we fill their wallows with water so they can cover themselves with lovely wet mud which cools them down .
So we keep extra busy during the summer and heat waves making sure they have water to drink and wet wallows to cool down.
In the photo is polly who spent a few weeks in doors whilst she farrowed as soon as we let her and her piglets out on Saturday she was straight in her wallow cooling off 😊
