The tax-free mileage rate for motorcycles has been 24p since 2002. Drivers just got a rise. Riders got a road tax increase.
Also this month: Hertfordshire changes its road safety strategy after riders respond, York brings transport planners to a MAG group meeting in the pub, police commissioners go quiet on theft, and riders make it into the road repair code.

MAG is the UK's leading campaigning voice for motorcyclists.

Ever filled in a council survey that didn’t even list motorcycle as a way to travel? Most riders have. It’s a big part of why so many think responding is a waste of time.

Hertfordshire’s road safety consultation was one of them. Riders and MAG told the council motorcycling needed a bigger place in its strategy. Its consultation report records motorcyclists as “particularly vocal”, and lists “Expanded motorcycling section” as the change it made in response.

The strategy now recommended for adoption names riders as a higher-risk group, commits to analysing motorcycle crashes, sets up workstreams that include motorcyclists, and promises to consider motorcycle needs in road design and maintenance. None of that was in the draft.

Consultations can work. Hertfordshire’s Local Transport Plan is open until 9 November, so we get to do it again.

Riders and MAG pushed Hertfordshire to put motorcycles into its road safety strategy. Have your say on the Local Transport Plan by 9 November.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: Budget raises car and van mileage rates again, but the motorcycle rate stays at 24p

Motorcyclists who ride their own motorcycle for work can still claim only 24p a mile tax-free after today’s Budget, the rate set in April 2002. The Chancellor has made the 55p a mile rate for cars and vans permanent and raised the car and van rate above 10,000 miles from 25p to 35p. The Budget presents this as the outcome of the Government’s mileage rates review. It does not change the motorcycle rate.

The Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rate is the amount an employer can pay, free of tax, for each business mile an employee covers in their own vehicle. Where an employer pays less, the employee can claim tax relief from HMRC on the difference, up to the AMAP rate. Self-employed riders who claim simplified expenses use the same 24p a mile rate for motorcycles.

The Budget raises car and van mileage rates but leaves the motorcycle rate at 24p a mile, unchanged since 2002. MAG asks the Treasury to explain why.

Tris Osborne MP wants Medway Council to open its bus lanes to riders, and he needs your signature.

He’s delivered for riders before. Medway Council vehicle parks now have security bars for motorbikes, which came out of the North Kent MAG Fight Motorcycle Theft public meeting, where Tris, then a councillor, helped secure the funding.

Members of North Kent MAG have been working behind the scenes, and the timing helps. Medway is expecting to consult on a new Local Transport Plan soon.

If you ride in Medway, sign the petition and send it to every rider you know.

**Motorcycle access to Medway Bus Lanes Petition**

I am conducting a petition on behalf of motorcyclists calling for Medway Council to open up bus lanes.

Many urban areas, including London, allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes to improve road safety for motorcyclists.

At present those using bus lanes are subject to a fine.

If you are a motorcyclist please do sign the petition at the link below:

This petition is for Medway Council only at this point.

The clocks go back tonight, and a lot of bikes are about to be put away for winter. Plenty will sit in a lock-up garage that gets checked every few weeks, if that.

If one of those bikes is stolen in November and nobody opens the door until January, it goes into the theft figures as a January theft. The monthly numbers you may see published come from snapshots of the Police National Computer, and a bike only appears there once someone reports it missing. A quiet winter on paper can hide thefts nobody has discovered yet, and a spring “rise” can include bikes taken months earlier.

The delay costs the owner too. Every week a stolen bike goes unreported is another week it can be stripped, moved or sold on before the police know to look for it.
If it happens to you, tell the police when you last saw the bike as well as when you found it gone. That window helps the investigation and helps get the numbers right. Getting motorcycle theft counted properly is the first of MAG’s four Fight Motorcycle Theft asks.

Motorcycles are stolen 11x more than cars. MAG's four-point plan — get theft counted, caught, designed out, and bikes brought back. See how you can help

Next Wednesday the Chancellor delivers the Autumn Budget. If you ride for work, one number matters.

The motorcycle mileage rate has been 24p a mile since April 2002. Car and van drivers went up to 55p this April, and the Treasury never published what that rise cost.

In June, Treasury wrote to MAG saying the mileage system, “including other rates, will be considered at a future fiscal event.” Next Wednesday is that event. So we put a fully costed case to the Chancellor through the official Budget process. We asked for the motorcycle rate to go up to 45p, which would cost no more than £34 million a year, and to be reviewed regularly so it never freezes for another twenty-four years.

We’ll find out on 28 October whether the evidence counted. Read the full case:

Motorcycle mileage rates haven't risen since 2002. MAG has submitted a fully costed case to the Treasury ahead of the 28th October Budget. Here's what's at stake
