There is a moment most drivers know.

A new noise starts.

A warning light flickers on.

The car feels slightly different.

And you think, “I’ll give it a week.”

Fair enough.

But cars are not known for quietly fixing themselves out of politeness.

Small issues are usually cheaper and easier to deal with early.

A worn brake pad caught in time is a routine job.

Left until it is grinding into the disc, it becomes a much bigger bill.

Same with a slow coolant leak.

Same with a rattle you have half stopped noticing.

This does not mean rushing to the garage for every tiny squeak.

It means if your car keeps trying to tell you something, it is worth listening sooner rather than later.

A quick check can cost far less than a breakdown on the school run.

That car on the drive is not fixing itself.

The one sitting on the drive that has not moved in months. One tyre looking sorry for itself, leaves gathering on the windscreen, and a growing sense that it is now more ornament than vehicle.

You keep meaning to sort it.

Then life happens.

Before you know it, that “I’ll deal with it next week” car is still there, quietly taking up space.

The good news is getting rid of it is easier than most people think.

Highfield Garage offers scrap car collection across Devon. We collect the vehicle, handle the process properly, and pay by bank transfer or cheque.

One thing to remember, you will still need to tell the DVLA once the vehicle is gone. It only takes a couple of minutes online and helps avoid any tax or insurance issues later.

If your car smells sweet, do not ignore it.

A sweet smell from your car can be a sign of a coolant leak.

It might be a hose, radiator, heater matrix or another part of the cooling system.

Left too long, coolant problems can lead to overheating.

And overheating can quickly turn a small problem into a large repair bill.

If something smells unusual, get it checked before it gets worse.

Hottest bank holiday on record. Your car's been sitting in a car park in full sun all day. Here's what to know before you drive home.

Interior temperature in a car parked in direct sunlight hits 50+ degrees in under 30 minutes. That's not just uncomfortable. It's dangerous.

Before you get back in:

Open all doors for 60 seconds. Let the heat escape before you climb in. Starting the engine with windows closed traps superheated air and makes your air con work twice as hard.

Check your steering wheel temperature. If it's too hot to hold comfortably, it's too hot to grip safely. Use a cloth or wait a minute before driving off.

Don't blast air con on full immediately. Start with windows down, air con on low, then gradually increase once the interior cools. Shocking the system when it's this hot can cause compressor failure.

Watch your temperature gauge on the way home. If it starts climbing into the red, pull over safely. Don't push it. Overheating in traffic on the A30 at 6pm is the last thing anyone needs today.

Never leave anyone or any pet in a parked car. Not even for five minutes. Not even with windows cracked. Interior temperature kills in minutes.

Bank holiday weekend. Heatwave. Everyone's heading to the beach.

If your car hasn't done a proper journey in weeks and you're about to load it up for Woolacombe tomorrow, just do a quick check tonight.

Coolant level - have a look at the reservoir when the engine's cold. If it's below the minimum line, top it up. Sitting in bank holiday traffic in this heat makes engines work hard. Overheating on the M5 is not how you want to start your weekend.

Tyre pressures - check them tonight while they're cold. Hot tarmac and underinflated tyres don't mix well. The correct pressure is on a sticker inside your driver's door.

Air con - if it's been blowing warm air all year and you've ignored it, you're about to find out why that was a mistake. Can't fix it tonight but at least you'll know.

Bank holiday breakdowns follow the same pattern every year. Cars that have been sitting around suddenly doing long journeys in heat. Overheating. Flat batteries. Tyres that looked fine but weren't.

Five minutes tonight beats three hours on the hard shoulder tomorrow.
