🍌 Eat a banana before your driving test. No, seriously, there's science behind this.

Before you scroll past, hear me out. This isn't a joke. It's actually one of the most useful pieces of advice I give to nervous test candidates.

Here's the science 👇

🧠 POTASSIUM, THE STRESS BUSTER
Bananas are packed with potassium. When you're anxious, your body releases cortisol, and your blood pressure rises. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure and supports your nervous system, quite literally helping to take the edge off that test-day panic.

⚡ NATURAL ENERGY, NO CRASH
A banana gives you a steady release of natural sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) along with fibre, which means your brain gets a sustained energy boost without the spike-and-crash you'd get from caffeine or energy drinks. You want consistent, focused energy for 40 minutes, not a jittery buzz followed by a slump.

😌 TRYPTOPHAN, THE MOOD LIFTER
Bananas contain tryptophan, which your body converts into serotonin, the "feel good" neurotransmitter. More serotonin = calmer mood = clearer thinking = better driving.

🍽️ EAT IT 30–60 MINUTES BEFORE
Give it time to work. Don't eat a massive meal (that redirects blood flow to your stomach), don't load up on coffee, and definitely don't skip food altogether, low blood sugar will tank your concentration.

The full test-day ritual I recommend:
✅ Good night's sleep the night before
✅ Light breakfast, nothing too heavy
✅ Banana 30–60 mins before your test
✅ Water, not energy drinks
✅ Arrive early, last-minute rushing spikes cortisol
✅ Remember: your instructor believed you were ready. Trust that.

Share this with someone who has a test coming up, it might just make the difference! 🍌

📋 The DVSA changed how driving tests are booked. Here's everything you need to know.

On 12th May 2026, the biggest overhaul of the driving test booking system in years came into force. If you're learning to drive, or know someone who is, this affects you directly.

Here's what changed 👇

🔑 ONLY YOU CAN BOOK YOUR TEST
From 12th May, only the learner driver can legally book, change, swap or cancel a practical driving test. Instructors and third parties can no longer do it on your behalf.

🔢 YOU GET TWO CHANGES, THAT'S IT
The number of times you can change your booking has been reduced from six to two. Use them wisely. If you use both and still need to change, you'll have to cancel and rebook from scratch, losing your place in the queue.

📍 FROM 9TH JUNE, TEST CENTRE RESTRICTIONS TOO
From 9th June 2026, if you need to move your test, you can only transfer it to one of the three nearest test centres to your original booking. The days of booking a slot 100 miles away to get an earlier date are over.

📊 THE BIGGER PICTURE
There are currently over 600,000 learners waiting for a driving test in the UK. Average waiting times have hit 22+ weeks in many areas, up from just 5 weeks before the pandemic. The DVSA is recruiting 450 new examiners and has deployed military driving examiners to try to bring that down, with a target of reducing waits to 3–4 months within 12 months.

The theory behind the changes? Bots and third-party resellers have been bulk-buying test slots and selling them at inflated prices, blocking genuine learners from getting appointments. These rules are designed to stop that.

Will it work? Too early to say for certain. But we're already hearing reports of rising no-show rates, which could start freeing up slots for learners who are ready and waiting.

📲 If you're one of the 600,000 waiting, let us make sure you're absolutely test-ready the moment your date arrives. Message us at thedrivinginstructor.net/enquiry

⚠️ New drivers, this one's important. Please read it.

I've had the privilege recently of jumping back in the car with some of my newly qualified drivers, and what I'm seeing out there is genuinely worrying me.

Speed? In most cases, that's not actually the biggest problem.

It's the gap.

The 2-second rule, leaving at least a 2-second following distance from the vehicle in front, has almost completely disappeared for a lot of new drivers. And I mean completely. I've personally witnessed gaps of less than half a second. That's not a following distance. That's tailgating. And here's the cold, hard reality of why it matters so much:

⏱️ Your reaction time alone, from seeing a hazard to your foot hitting the brake, is typically around 0.7 to 1 second for most drivers.

Add in the time it actually takes the car to stop, and at 30mph you need around 23 metres to come to a halt in good conditions.

Half a second gap at 30mph? You're already inside the car in front before your foot even moves.

Now I'm not here to lecture anyone about speed. If you want to drive quickly, that's a personal choice, but please, please do it with space. Space is what gives you time to react. Space is what saves lives. Speed without space is where the danger really lives.

✅ 2 seconds in good conditions
✅ 4+ seconds in wet weather
✅ If in doubt, back off

I'm on a mission for safer roads, and it starts with the basics we sometimes forget the moment we pass. Share this with a new driver you care about. 🙏

"🎉 Congratulations Oli, first time pass!
"It's just driving init"

Another one for the board and another one that makes this job genuinely special. Oli passed his driving test first time today and honestly, he made it look smooth. 🚗

It's moments like these that remind me exactly why I do what I do. Watching someone go from nervous learner to confident driver and walk out of that test centre with a pass certificate in hand, there's nothing quite like it.

Oli, enjoy the freedom, stay safe out there, and keep those mirrors checked! 😄

🚗 We've been thinking about something, and we need YOUR help to decide if it's worth doing.

We're looking into launching a "First Gear Experience" in the Worksop area, a safe, supervised, off-road driving experience for young people aged 11–17.

Imagine giving your child their very first taste of being behind the wheel, in a controlled, safe environment, with a qualified instructor guiding them every step of the way. No roads. No pressure. Just the thrill of driving for the first time and building early confidence and awareness that genuinely makes them a safer driver when the time comes.

We want to know if there's demand for this locally before we commit. So, a few quick questions for you 👇

1️⃣ Would you be interested in this for your child/grandchild/young person?
YES / NO / MAYBE, tell us in the comments!

2️⃣ What age would you want to start them?
A — 11–13
B — 13–15
C — 15–17
D — Any age, the younger the better!

3️⃣ How much would you expect to pay for a 30-minute experience?
A — £25–£35
B — £35–£50
C — £50+ if the experience is top quality

4️⃣ What matters most to you?
A — Safety and instructor quality
B — The experience feeling exciting and memorable
C — It building real skills, not just a fun day out
D — All of the above!

Share this with every parent, grandparent, auntie and uncle you know, the more responses we get, the more likely this is to happen! 🙌

💛 Today is a big day for us. We've officially passed £10,000 in community support for 2025.

£10,000. Through sponsorships, free lessons, gifts, prizes and backing people and organisations that make Worksop a better place, we've already beaten our full-year target, and we're not done yet.

This isn't something we shout about for likes or shares. We do it because this community is the reason we exist. Every pupil who passes their test with us, every family that supports us, every person who recommends us to a friend, you make what we do possible. And giving back is the very least we can do.

We've supported local charities, sponsored community events, given away free lessons to people who needed them and put real prizes into the hands of our pupils and their families.

But here's the question: 👇

We're only in week 20 of the year. If we've already hit £10,000, where do YOU think we'll end up by December?

Drop your prediction in the comments. The person who gets closest wins something special from us. 🎁

To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. 💛

🎙️ Every Sunday evening, I give away an hour of my time, completely free. Here's why.

Every Sunday, 8pm–9pm, I go live right here on Facebook for an open Ask Me Anything session. No agenda, no script, no sales pitch.

You show up. You ask whatever you want. I answer honestly.

🚗 Nervous about your upcoming test? Ask me.
📚 Stuck on a theory topic? Ask me.
👨‍👩‍👧 Parent of a learner unsure how to help? Ask me.
🎓 Thinking about becoming an instructor? Ask me.
🤔 Just curious about something driving-related? Ask me anything.

I do this because I genuinely believe that a better-informed learner is a safer driver. And safer drivers are what this is all really about.

It costs you nothing. It takes an hour. And I promise you'll leave knowing something you didn't before.

This Sunday. 8pm. Right here.

And very soon, we'll be expanding to other platforms too so even more people can join in. 👀

Set a reminder. Bring a friend. Bring your questions.

See you Sunday 👋

📋 Good news on the horizon for learners waiting for a test date?

Feedback suggests that no-show rates at driving tests are rising, and the belief is that this is a direct result of the DVSA's rule changes on 12th May 2026, which removed the ability to cancel or rebook tests at short notice.

Now, before we get too excited, this is early intel, and nothing is confirmed. But the logic stacks up. If you can no longer easily move your test, some people are simply not showing up rather than sitting a test they feel underprepared for.

What could that mean for learners? More last-minute test slots are potentially becoming available in the coming weeks and months. 👀

We're keeping a close eye on this. If you've been waiting for a test date and want to be ready to jump on a slot the moment one comes up, that's exactly what we're here for.

Drop us a message and let's make sure you're test-ready when the opportunity comes. 📩
