Storm casualty! Covers ripped off, auto pump drained battery and this is the result. Unfortunately the situation wasn't helped by a failed w**d hatch seal. The boat didnt need to down very far before canal water spilled through.

Todays job involved looking for a small gas leak. Regs on boats dictate that all gas fittings should be readily accessible (accessible without the use of tools) obviously for an occasion such as today.This boat has a bathroom at the stern end against the bulkhead and on the other side is the cylinder locker. I've had to measure up, make an educated guess and cut through the shower panels to find the fitting. One gues as to which fitting was leaking, yes you've got it, the hidden one. Think about your boats and access to fittings. Both the gas leak and hidden fittings were fails on the BSS examination that I carried out.

I only touched it, honest!
This boat in for blacking had a very small drip coming from the base of the rudder tube that goes up through the fuel tank. I thought I'd see where it was coming from and when I started to pick at an area of rust a jet of diesel shot into my face. I put my finger in the hole and had get one of the lads to come out to my rescue with containers!

Hey floaty folk, most of you know by now that I don't enjoy failing boats when I carry out Boat Safety Examinations. One of the things that often surprises me when I visit a boat is the state of some of the LPG flexible hoses which everyone looks at on a fairly regular basis. take a look at a few photos taken not just on our canal but on the G&S canal and more. This is a small selection of quite a portfolio. If you have hoses looking like this they obviously need replacing. Try to find someone competent (gas safe) to change these before I visit. Failing that, I can help out as a sperate job. As most of you know I've been Gas Safe registered for boats for 30yrs and can help out on any LPG problems that crop up during an examination (if you wish) which means you don't have to spend time finding someone.
