🔊 WHY ARE YOUR BRAKES SQUEALING OR JUDDERING? 🛑

That embarrassing squeal at the traffic lights? The steering wheel shaking when you brake? Your car might be trying to tell you something! 👀

But here's the thing: not every brake noise means you need new discs and pads. Let's look at some possible causes. 👇

🎵 BRAKE SQUEAL

A high-pitched squeal can be caused by:

🔹 Worn brake pads or wear indicators
🔹 Brake dust, dirt or debris
🔹 Glazing on the pads or discs
🔹 Vibration between brake components
🔹 Surface corrosion, especially after the car has been sitting in damp conditions

A little noise after rain can be normal, but persistent squealing deserves an inspection.

🫨 BRAKE JUDDER

If your car vibrates or shudders when you brake, possible causes include:

🔹 Disc thickness variation
🔹 Excessive disc run-out
🔹 Uneven deposits on the disc surface
🔹 Worn suspension or steering components
🔹 Wheel or mounting issues

And no, blindly fitting new discs isn't always the answer! The cause needs identifying first, otherwise you could end up with the same problem all over again.

🔧 THE BOTTOM LINE

Brakes are a safety-critical system. Guesswork and throwing parts at a problem aren't a proper diagnosis.

🛑 5 SIGNS YOUR BRAKES MIGHT BE WORN! 🚗🔧

Your brakes are pretty important. They're also one of those things you really don't want to leave until they're making noises loud enough to wake the neighbours. 😬

Here are 5 signs your brakes might need some attention. 👇

🔊 1. SQUEALING OR SCREECHING

A high-pitched noise when braking can be caused by worn pads, vibration, corrosion or other brake issues. Some pads even have wear indicators designed to make a noise when they're getting low!

🪨 2. GRINDING NOISES

If your brakes sound like someone's dragging a metal bin down the road, get them checked ASAP. Your pads may be worn down to the metal, potentially damaging your discs.

🦶 3. VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING

Feeling a judder through the steering wheel or brake pedal? It could be uneven disc thickness, disc run-out or another issue that needs investigating.

📏 4. YOUR BRAKING FEELS DIFFERENT

If your car takes longer to stop, pulls to one side, or the pedal feels unusually soft or spongy, don't ignore it.

👀 5. VISIBLE WEAR OR CORROSION

Deep grooves, heavy rust, cracks or excessively thin discs are all reasons to get your brakes inspected.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: If your brakes suddenly lose effectiveness, the pedal sinks, or you hear severe grinding, stop somewhere safe and arrange professional assistance rather than continuing to drive.

🛑 BRAKE DISCS vs BRAKE PADS.. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? 🚗🔧

You know your brakes need doing, but what's the difference between discs and pads? Let's break it down. 👇

🔩 BRAKE PADS
These are the friction materials that clamp against your brake discs when you press the brake pedal. They wear down over time because, well, that's literally their job!

🔘 BRAKE DISCS
These are the metal discs attached to your wheels that the pads grip onto to slow your car down. They wear too, and can develop grooves, cracks, corrosion or become too thin to safely use.

🤔 SO, DO YOU ALWAYS NEED BOTH?

Nope! 🙌

✅ Pads only: If your discs are still in good condition and within the manufacturer's specifications, you may only need new pads.

✅ Discs AND pads: If your discs are worn below their minimum thickness, damaged, or otherwise unserviceable, they'll need replacing too. (You CANNOT safely replace discs and use old pads!)

The important bit? New pads won't magically fix knackered discs. And replacing parts that don't need replacing isn't doing anyone's wallet any favours either!
