Today I attended a BMW 1 Series diesel after the customer experienced repeated battery problems and a low battery charge warning.

✅ Supplied and fitted a new Bosch AGM start-stop battery
✅ Registered the new battery to the vehicle
✅ Carried out diagnostic checks using my Launch diagnostic equipment
✅ Checked the stored fault codes and identified a separate glow plug fault

🚨 STUCK IN GEAR, STRANDED ROADSIDE… AND ANOTHER PROBLEM FOUND! 🚨 🔧🚗

Another roadside breakdown callout for OTG Auto Repairs — and this one involved more than just getting the car moving again!

🚗 THE PROBLEM
I attended a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze that was stuck in gear, with the gear stick moving forward and backwards but refusing to move side to side.

🔍 THE DIAGNOSIS
I traced the fault to a gear selector cable that had popped off the selector mechanism on top of the gearbox.

🛠️ GETTING THE CUSTOMER HOME
I secured the cable temporarily to help the customer get home safely. Thankfully, they made it home without any issues!

📦 The replacement part is being ordered, and I'll get the proper repair carried out ASAP.

💧 ANOTHER ISSUE SPOTTED
While checking the vehicle, I noticed the coolant reservoir was empty. I topped it up with water as a temporary measure and advised the customer that the cooling system needs investigating and sorting as soon as possible to prevent potential overheating.

As this was a roadside breakdown, my priority was diagnosing the fault and getting the customer home safely rather than stopping to take pictures.

🔧 BMW X1 – Brake Repairs & Battery Replacement 🔋

This BMW X1 had been sitting for a long time, meaning there was plenty of corrosion and seized components to contend with! 💪🔩

Getting everything apart was a challenge, but persistence and the right approach were key to tackling the corrosion and freeing off stubborn components.

🛠️ Work carried out:
✅ Front brake discs and pads replaced
✅ Rear brake work carried out
✅ New battery supplied and fitted
✅ Corroded and seized components dealt with during the repair
✅ Brake components cleaned, inspected and reassembled where work was completed

The vehicle also had a number of additional issues identified during inspection, including a broken rear suspension spring and significant corrosion to underneath components. These were highlighted to the customer, with further inspection and repairs recommended.

🔧 Nissan Juke 1.5 dCi – Alternator Replacement & Electrical Diagnosis 🚗

This Nissan Juke was suffering from intermittent electrical issues, with the dashboard display cutting out and the power steering losing assistance while driving.

A previous mechanic had diagnosed a faulty alternator, so I replaced the alternator and auxiliary drive belt as requested. However, the original symptoms persisted, and charging voltage was still reading above 15V, so further investigation was needed.

🔍 Time to get back to the diagnostics!

Rather than simply replacing more parts, I carried out further electrical testing to track down the underlying issue.

✅ Replaced the alternator and auxiliary drive belt.

✅ Tested battery and charging system voltage.

✅ Performed voltage-drop tests on the positive and earth circuits.

✅ Checked relevant fuses and electrical connections.

✅ Found corrosion on the battery/gearbox earth connections.

✅ Cleaned the corroded earth points and mating surfaces before refitting.

✅ Rechecked charging voltage and carried out a road test.

⚡ The result: After cleaning the earth connections, charging voltage settled back to approximately 14V. The dashboard remained on during the road test, with no further power-steering or display dropouts observed.

Sometimes, replacing the part originally diagnosed doesn't resolve the whole problem. Corroded earth connections can cause frustrating electrical issues, which is why proper testing is so important!

The remaining horn and brake-light faults require further specialist electrical investigation, and the customer has been advised to consult an auto electrician.

🔧 ROCKER COVER GASKET REPLACEMENT – VAUXHALL ASTRA GTC 1.4 TURBO 🚗

Today's job involved investigating an oil leak on a Vauxhall Astra GTC 1.4 Turbo.

🔍 What we found:
The original rocker cover gasket had perished badly and broken into several pieces, compromising the seal and allowing oil to escape.

🛠️ Work carried out:

✅ Removed the rocker cover to access the gasket.

✅ Inspected the exposed camshafts and timing-chain area.

✅ Removed the damaged, broken gasket.

✅ Cleaned the sealing surfaces ready for refitting.

✅ Fitted a replacement rocker cover gasket and refitted the cover.

🛢️ The engine was also found to be very low on oil, so the oil level needs to be kept correct and monitored closely following the repair.

Regular checks and dealing with oil leaks early can help prevent further problems and potentially costly engine damage.

🔧 BMW X5 E70 – No Crank / No Start Fault Diagnosed & Repaired
Another car back on the road by OTG Auto Repairs 🔧

Customer contacted me with a no-crank/no-start fault on their BMW X5. The vehicle had power, but pressing the start button resulted in absolutely nothing.

🔎 First step was checking the battery and connections.
The existing battery and negative terminal/IBS connection were heavily corroded. I cleaned up the corroded IBS/negative connection and fitted a new 95Ah AGM battery, then connected everything back up and tested the vehicle.

Unfortunately, the X5 still had a complete no-crank fault, so further investigation was required.

I then inspected the engine/gearbox earth connections and found the engine earth strap was severely corroded and deteriorated.

As shown in the photos, the copper braid had deteriorated badly and was literally breaking apart. This type of earth-strap deterioration is a common issue on BMW X5 E70s and can cause starting and electrical problems.

🔧 Work carried out: ✅ Corroded IBS/negative connection cleaned
✅ New 95Ah AGM battery supplied & fitted
✅ Further diagnostics carried out
✅ Severely corroded engine earth strap identified
✅ Genuine BMW replacement earth strap supplied & fitted
✅ Earth connections cleaned and secured
✅ Starting system tested
🚗 After fitting the new earth strap, the X5 started straight away.

Another fault diagnosed properly without unnecessarily replacing the starter motor.

🔧 Renault Clio – Rear Brake Repair 🔧
Another job completed by OTG Auto Repairs today.

The customer contacted me after the rear brake pads had come out of position. On inspection, the retainer pin was found to be the cause, allowing the pads to move out of place.

The issue was rectified by supplying and fitting new rear brake pads and new retainers.

✅ Brake assembly checked
✅ Hub faces cleaned
✅ Brakes checked before returning the vehicle

🔧 VW Crafter Exhaust Repair 🔧

This VW Crafter came in after the exhaust had come apart from the DPF connection after hitting a puddle.

🔍 Diagnosis:
The exhaust clamp had failed due to corrosion, allowing the exhaust to separate from the DPF.

🛠️ Work carried out:
• Removed the damaged/failed exhaust clamp
• Supplied and fitted a new replacement clamp
• Reconnected and secured the exhaust to the DPF
• Checked the joint and ensured everything was secure
• Checked for exhaust leaks after fitting
✅ Exhaust securely refitted and the van back on the road.
