Why is speeding so controversial for some drivers?
Many drivers see themselves as "better than average" drivers and therefore believe the risks of speeding apply to others and not to them. As a result, discussions about speeding often become debates about values and beliefs and not about road safety evidence.
Speeding is controversial because some drivers often judge risk based on their own perceived driving skills and experience, while road safety policy is based on evidence showing that even small reductions in speed can reduce the number and severity of collisions across an entire community.
Drivers don't deliberately set out to be unsafe, by working together we can make our roads safer.
