Over the last 2 weeks at StayKool, we analysed 204 air conditioning appointments and the results show exactly why a proper leak test matters before simply “topping up” a system.

This report was generated using all our customer reports we record after a service.

Out of 204 vehicles inspected:
- 140 appointments mentioned leaks or suspected leaks
- 95 vehicles had confirmed refrigerant leaks

What failed most often:
1. Condensers — 53 leaks
(mostly stone damage and lower seal corrosion)

2. O-rings & seals — 26 leaks

3. Pipes / hoses / lines — 15 leaks

4. Compressors — 9 leaks

5. Rear A/C pipework — 7 leaks

6. Evaporators — 2 leaks

7. Expansion valves (TXV) — 2 leaks

One of the biggest findings was that leak rates were very similar between older R134a systems and newer R1234yf systems.

However:
- Older vehicles tended to suffer more condenser corrosion.
- Newer R1234yf systems showed more seal and pipework leaks, likely due to the higher operating pressures and smaller refrigerant molecule size.

This is exactly why simply adding gas without testing can be a false economy.

At StayKool we carry out:
- Nitrogen pressure testing
- UV dye leak detection
- Ultrasonic leak detection
- Deep vacuum testing
- Full system performance checks

Many garages only recover and refill the gas. We focus on diagnosing WHY the gas has been lost in the first place.

If a leak is found, we only charge £35 for the diagnostic leak test, and once the leak is identified it can often be repaired far cheaper than customers expect.
