🚗 AUDI A4 2.0 TDI AVANT – BLOCKED DPF OR FAULTY SENSOR?

Another perfect example of why proper diagnostics are so important!

This higher-mileage Audi A4 Avant arrived with us today for a DPF assessment.

The owner was concerned that the DPF was badly blocked, having previously had a DPF pressure sensor replaced elsewhere.

🔍 OUR DIAGNOSTIC FINDINGS

Our initial live data showed an extremely high DPF exhaust back pressure reading of 118 mbar at idle!

At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking the DPF was severely restricted.

However, knowing how these systems operate and how the sensors should respond, we weren’t convinced.

Rather than simply accepting the figures displayed on the diagnostic equipment, we carried out further manual testing.

✅ THE RESULTS

* Diagnostic sensor reading: 118 mbar
* Actual pressure measured manually: 8 mbar at idle
* Further testing confirmed the recently fitted DPF pressure sensor was providing completely inaccurate readings.

THE DPF WASN’T THE PROBLEM!

Unfortunately, the replacement sensor was an inferior aftermarket part. We won’t name brands, but it’s certainly not a sensor we would ever choose to fit.

A new genuine OE sensor has now been ordered.

💡 THE LESSON?

Diagnostic equipment is only as good as the information it’s receiving.

Reading fault codes and live data is one thing. Understanding those readings, questioning them and carrying out independent tests to verify the results is what makes the difference.

A DPF showing high back pressure doesn’t automatically mean the DPF is blocked!

🔧 GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS — ONCE AGAIN! 🚗

Booked in for a £300 DPF clean — but was it actually needed?

This Mercedes arrived with an illuminated engine management light, with the owner believing the DPF was blocked.

Rather than simply carrying out the requested £300 clean, we started with a proper diagnostic assessment.

🔍 Here’s what we discovered.

1️⃣ Exhaust Pressure Sensor

Our initial investigation identified an electrical circuit fault relating to the exhaust pressure sensor.

During our visual inspection, we discovered the sensor was completely disconnected! 🤯

Once reconnected, it immediately began reporting correctly again.

2️⃣ NOx Sensor Fault

An extended road test identified a non-responsive NOx sensor, with a corresponding electrical fault stored.

A genuine replacement sensor costs in the region of £667!

But rather than simply recommending an expensive replacement, we decided to dig a little deeper.

3️⃣ Going That Extra Mile!

Further research into manufacturer technical information uncovered an outstanding service campaign relating to an engine ECU software update and, where necessary, replacement of affected NOx sensors.

The owner has since contacted the manufacturer, who confirmed the outstanding campaign and arranged an appointment.

Hopefully, this will result in the NOx sensor issue being resolved without the customer facing an expensive replacement bill.

✅ And the DPF?

A healthy exhaust back pressure reading of just 8 mbar at idle.

No DPF cleaning required!

🚗 MOBILE DPF CLEANING – YES OR NO?

We receive a lot of enquiries asking:

“Can you clean my DPF at my home or workplace?”

The answer is YES – but not every DPF can or should be cleaned on the vehicle.

✅ When is mobile DPF cleaning suitable?

Generally, on lower-mileage vehicles where the DPF is primarily restricted by soot, an on-vehicle clean may be suitable, subject to a diagnostic assessment.

❌ When is mobile DPF cleaning NOT suitable?

* Higher-mileage vehicles with significant ash accumulation.
* Euro 6 vehicles with heavily restricted DPFs, particularly those fitted with AdBlue systems.
* DPFs contaminated with ash or AdBlue deposits.
* Vehicles requiring the DPF to be removed for professional cleaning.

WHY THE DIFFERENCE?

Soot and ash are two completely different things.

Soot can often be removed through our four-stage on-vehicle cleaning process.

Ash cannot be effectively removed using an on-vehicle DPF clean.

For heavily restricted, ash-loaded or contaminated DPFs, our recommendation is to remove the filter and professionally flash clean it using our Oxyhtech cleaning system.

🔧 WE DO NOT OFFER DPF REMOVAL AND FLASH CLEANING AS A MOBILE SERVICE.

These jobs must be carried out at workshop.

We would rather explain this before booking than charge a customer for a mobile clean that isn’t suitable for their vehicle.

The correct cleaning method depends on the condition of your DPF – not simply whether we can get to your vehicle.

🚗 2012 Honda CR-V 2.2 Diesel – 169,000 Miles – DPF Issues!

Another higher-mileage vehicle through our workshop, proving just how important proper diagnostics and live data analysis really are.

These Honda engines don’t always produce fault codes to highlight underlying issues, which is why checking live data is essential.

🔍 Our Initial Assessment:

DPF exhaust back pressure was reading 30 mbar at idle, indicating a restricted filter.

Given the vehicle’s mileage and likely ash accumulation, our preferred recommendation was to remove the DPF for professional off-vehicle flash cleaning.

However, the owner plans to change the vehicle soon and understandably wanted to keep costs down.

After discussing the available options, they decided to proceed with our four-stage on-vehicle DPF cleaning service.

✅ The Results:

🔴 Before cleaning: 30 mbar

🟢 After cleaning: 9 mbar

That’s a 70% reduction in exhaust back pressure!

Following a short initial road test, the vehicle was taken on an extended road test to check its performance and confirm the improvement.

While on-vehicle cleaning cannot remove accumulated ash, it can still provide a worthwhile improvement in the right circumstances.

Not every DPF problem requires the same solution. We assess each vehicle individually and recommend the most appropriate options based on its condition, mileage and the owner’s circumstances.

🚐 2015 Ford Transit Custom – DPF Problems Resolved! 🔧

Another Ford Transit Custom arrived with a badly restricted DPF and excessive exhaust back pressure.

The vehicle was also struggling to reach the exhaust temperatures required for successful DPF regeneration.

🔍 Our diagnostic assessment identified the underlying problem – a blocked exhaust vapour valve.

This valve plays an important role in helping the exhaust system reach the temperatures needed for DPF self-cleaning.

✅ DPF removed for professional off-vehicle flash cleaning
✅ Blocked exhaust vapour valve issue resolved
✅ Exhaust back pressure restored to normal levels

🚗 ANOTHER LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT WITH DPF ISSUES!

But the blocked DPF is only part of the problem! ⚠️

This Land Rover Discovery Sport arrived with a heavily blocked Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

With 124,000 miles on the clock, ash accumulation is also a significant consideration. Unlike soot, ash cannot be removed through regeneration.

In this case, the most effective alternative to replacing the DPF is to remove it from the vehicle and professionally flash clean it using our Oxyhtech cleaning system.

🔍 BUT WHAT CAUSED THE DPF TO BECOME BLOCKED IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Our diagnostic investigation identified several issues:

❌ 3 faulty glow plugs

❌ Piston cooling jet fault

❌ Engine service required

❌ Engine oil contaminated through diesel dilution

These issues can interfere with the vehicle’s ability to carry out successful DPF regenerations.

🚨 “WE FORCED A REGEN… BUT IT DIDN’T WORK!” 🚨

We’re now receiving at least 2–3 phone calls every week from vehicle owners telling us exactly this!

Our advice? Put the diagnostic tool down and get the vehicle properly assessed BEFORE pressing that button!

⚠️ FORCED DPF REGENERATIONS ARE NOT A MAGIC FIX!

Here’s what you need to understand:

❌ They only burn off soot – They do NOT remove accumulated ash.

❌ They don’t fix the underlying problem – Whatever caused the DPF to become blocked in the first place may still be there.

❌ They can cause expensive damage – Attempting a forced regeneration on a severely restricted DPF can result in dangerously high exhaust temperatures and potential damage to the DPF and other components.

❌ They can contribute to oil dilution – Diesel entering the engine oil can compromise lubrication. Oil condition and level must be checked, and an oil and filter change may be required.

💷 And here’s the expensive part…

You could end up paying for a forced regeneration, an oil and filter change, and STILL have exactly the same problem you started with!

🔧 2013 Vauxhall Vivaro 2.0 CDTi – DPF & Boost Issues

Another example of why correct diagnosis is so important!

This Vivaro came to us with various faults relating to the DPF and boost system.

The vehicle had previously been to another garage, where a vacuum boost control solenoid had been replaced in the hope of restoring boost pressure and extinguishing the warning lights.

The owner had also been advised that the DPF was blocked and required cleaning.

Not entirely convinced, the owner’s son contacted us for a second opinion.

🔍 Here’s what our diagnostic investigation uncovered:

Using our smoke testing equipment, we identified a split boost pipe, resulting in a loss of boost pressure.

However, we also noticed something unusual during our DPF assessment – extremely low exhaust back pressure readings.

Further investigation revealed that the DPF pressure pipe was also split, resulting in inaccurate pressure readings.

Once the defective pressure pipe was replaced, the DPF back pressure readings returned to normal, healthy levels.

✅ Split boost pipe identified using smoke testing.

✅ Split DPF pressure pipe identified through further investigation.

✅ Accurate DPF pressure readings restored.

✅ DPF confirmed to be operating within healthy pressure levels.

✅ No DPF cleaning required!

Two separate faults affecting the vehicle, neither of which required the DPF to be cleaned or replaced.

This is exactly why we carry out a proper diagnostic assessment before recommending any DPF cleaning.

Replacing parts or cleaning a DPF without identifying the underlying problem can be an expensive and unnecessary exercise.

Two pretty much identical 2016 Toyota Avensis 1.6 diesels, both arriving with almost identical symptoms and faults.

Both were lit up like Christmas trees with multiple warning lights across the dash.

Even more annoyingly for the owners, when the fault occurred the engine management system also deactivated the automatic release of the electronic handbrake.

Despite the symptoms, neither vehicle required DPF cleaning.
