WE TOOK ON THE DVLA. NOW THE RULES HAVE CHANGED. 🏆🇬🇧
12+ MONTHS OF CHALLENGES. COUNTLESS EMAILS. PARLIAMENTARY ESCALATION. AND FINALLY, A MAJOR CHANGE IN MOTORHOME CLASSIFICATION POLICY.
At Motorcraft Adventure Developments, we’ve never been afraid to stand up for what we believe is right.
For over a year, we’ve been challenging the DVLA’s outdated and unnecessarily restrictive approach to reclassifying converted vehicles as Motor Caravans.
We repeatedly questioned why a professionally engineered, fully equipped expedition motorhome could be refused recognition simply because it didn’t have decorative graphics or an external awning rail.
Our argument was simple.
A MOTORHOME SHOULD BE RECOGNISED FOR WHAT IT IS, NOT WHETHER IT HAS STICKERS AND AN AWNING.
We challenged the policy.
We challenged the reasoning.
We refused to accept that specialist expedition vehicles should be penalised for being designed to do exactly what they’re built to do.
And when our arguments continued to meet resistance, we took the matter further, with the support of our local MP, Jo White, who helped escalate our concerns to parliamentary level.
FAST FORWARD TO 19 OCTOBER 2026…
The DVLA has now published revised Motor Caravan classification criteria.
✅ Mandatory motorhome-style graphics? GONE.
✅ External awning bar requirement? GONE.
✅ Pop-top roofs previously excluded? NOW ACCEPTED.
✅ Previously rejected applications? CAN NOW BE REVIEWED.
These are some of the very issues Motorcraft has spent the last 12+ months fighting to change.
Can we say Motorcraft single-handedly brought about this decision? No.
But can we say we challenged these exact requirements, refused to back down, took our concerns to parliamentary level and have now seen the rules change in precisely the areas we contested?
ABSOLUTELY.
And we’re proud of it.
This isn’t just about Motorcraft. It’s about the wider UK motorhome conversion industry, independent manufacturers, expedition vehicle builders and self-build enthusiasts who’ve been affected by requirements that made little practical sense.
We believe good engineering, safe construction and genuine habitation facilities should matter more than superficial accessories.
TODAY, WE’RE CALLING THIS A WIN.
A win for common sense.
A win for independent British manufacturing.
And a win for everyone who has challenged a decision they genuinely believed was wrong.
A sincere thank you to Jo White MP for supporting our concerns and helping ensure our arguments were heard at a higher level.
There’s still work to do, particularly for specialist expedition vehicles, but this is a major step forward.
WE DIDN’T BACK DOWN. THE POLICY CHANGED. AND THAT’S SOMETHING WORTH CELEBRATING. 💪
