🚗 Why does driving just a little faster make such a big difference?

This chart shows the relationship between speed (MPH) and how long it takes to travel 10 miles.

The black numbers are your speed in miles per hour (MPH).

The blue numbers around the outside show how many minutes it takes to drive 10 miles at that speed.

Examples:

* 🚗 20 mph = 30 minutes to travel 10 miles.
* 🚗 30 mph = 20 minutes.
* 🚗 40 mph = 15 minutes.
* 🚗 60 mph = 10 minutes.
* 🚗 70 mph = 8½ minutes.
* 🚗 80 mph = 7½ minutes.
* 🚗 100 mph = 6 minutes.
* 🚗 120 mph = 5 minutes.

What does this teach us?

Many drivers speed because they think they’ll save a lot of time. In reality, the time saved is often surprisingly small.

For example, over a 10-mile journey:

* Increasing your speed from 20 mph to 40 mph saves around 15 minutes, effectively halving your time.

* Increasing from 70 mph to 100 mph saves less than 2 1/2 minutes.

Yet driving faster significantly:

* ⚠️ Increases your stopping distance.
* ⚠️ Reduces the time you have to react to hazards.
* ⚠️ Makes any collision much more severe.
* ⚠️ Increases the likelihood of speeding penalties.

The key message for learner drivers:
Speed limits are there to keep everyone safe—not to make journeys longer. Saving a minute or two is rarely worth the extra risk.

💬 Remember: It’s better to arrive a few minutes later than not arrive at all.
