Every great car deserves a paper trail to match.

Resting on the bonnet of Ian Copham's Lotus Esprit S1 is its Lotus Certificate of Vehicle Provenance. Manufactured 25 September 1976. One of only 27 white-and-tartan spec cars ever built. Signed by the Company Archivist.

Fourteen years of restoration. Every invoice, every engineer's note, every achievement. All catalogued in a Motor Folio, personalised to the car.

Fourteen years. One car. One deadline.

In 2010, Ian Copham bought a non-running Lotus Esprit S1 for £9,250. White exterior, green and orange tartan interior. The same specification as Roger Moore's car in The Spy Who Loved Me.

The plan was simple: get it running, refresh the trim. That plan lasted about a week.

What followed was a complete strip-down to bare shell and chassis, a 160-to-200 BHP engine rebuild showcased at Race Retro, a custom stainless exhaust, full repaint in Monaco white, and a period-correct interior retrim from scratch.

The deadline that finally finished it: Ian's daughter asked if it could be her wedding car for August 2024. He drove it for the first time in 14 years, two days before the wedding.

Six weeks later, it won first place at Salon Privé, Blenheim Palace.

This is UHP 985R. The 49th Lotus Esprit S1 ever built, and the 13th white-and-tartan spec car. The same combination Roger Moore drove off a Sardinian dock in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Ian Copham found it in 2010. A non-runner, in need of everything. Fourteen years later it walked away with first place at Salon Privé, Blenheim Palace.
