DervTech are a performance tuning specialists based just outside of Manchester, in the North of England. We have gained a reputation for providing top class hardware and software tuning solutions for many makes and models of diesel or petrol vehicles. We write all our remaps ourselves, in the proper way (just like the original manufacturer would have!!) and don’t use cheap copies bought from eBay as many "tuners" do. Whether you are wanting a stage 1 tune for a totally standard car, stage 2 for a car with bolt on modifications or a stage 3 for those really bespoke cars – we can do them all! Couple this with the ability to turn off EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves) and DPF (diesel particulate filters) and enable those features such as hard cut (popcorn) rev limiters and launch control… we really are your one stop tuning shop! After years of playing with ECU’s and working on different cars, we were tuning our own, tuning our friends and then ultimately tuning friends of our friends. This is when DervTech was born!

πŸ”΅ The CURVE πŸ”΅

The blue lines show just how much more performance is available throughout the rev range, not just at the top end.

From around 2,500RPM the difference in torque is already substantial, with the tuned car producing over 400Nm across a huge portion of the rev range.

And then there's the horsepower. The standard car doesn't reach its peak 227HP until 6,087RPM. With our Stage 1 calibration we're already producing approximately that much power by 3,900RPM, that's over 2,000RPM earlier.

This translates to stronger acceleration, improved mid-range performance and a car that pulls significantly harder without constantly needing to chase the redline and this is why we don't just chase peak numbers.

Our calibrations are developed to deliver usable performance across the rev range, with consideration given to how the engine delivers its power, not simply how impressive the final number looks on paper.

Every vehicle is checked, logged and calibrated on our dyno, because making more power is one thing but how that power is delivered is just as important.

It makes what it makes.

πŸ‡ΆπŸ‡¦ ALL THE WAY FROM QATAR! πŸ‡ΆπŸ‡¦

This GP3 came to us for some maintenance, modifications and our custom tuning!

- Engine oil & filter service
- Fitting of downpipe
- Custom ECU & TCU tuning

This particular GP3 was already fitted with a custom straight through exhaust system, so it certainly wasn't quiet when it arrived however with the downpipe fitted and Chris working his magic on the calibration, this GP3 now roars! and flames...

Of course as much as we love seeing what these cars are capable of, performance and engine safety remain our priority. One of the biggest limitations we encountered during tuning was the standard intercooler.

As we increased performance, intake air temperatures became a limiting factor. Higher temperatures mean we have to be more conservative with the calibration to maintain safe and consistent performance, particularly when the car is being driven hard. With the temperatures this car will experience in Qatar, keeping those intake temperatures under control is even more important!

An upgraded intercooler would certainly help unlock more of the GP3's potential but for now we worked within the limitations of the hardware fitted rather than chasing a number at the expense of reliability.

As we always say, it makes what it makes!

πŸ”§ Wheel Alignment & Full Geometry Setups πŸ”§

Something we don't talk about enough is out wheel alignment and suspension geometry work.

Wheel alignment is about much more than just making sure your steering wheel is straight and your tyres wear evenly. Camber and toe adjustments can make a significant difference to how a car handles, how it responds through corners and how stable it feels on the road.

Ben has a particular interest in suspension and specialist knowledge of geometry setups, especially how different camber and toe settings affect the behaviour of a car.

We offer everything from standard wheel alignments to full geometry setups, taking into consideration the vehicle, any suspension modifications, the driver's preferences and what the car is actually used for.

For example, a car used for daily driving will generally benefit from a very different setup to one regularly used on track. Even two people driving the same model of car might prefer completely different handling characteristics.

Things like front-end response, rear-end rotation, cornering stability and tyre wear can all be influenced by geometry adjustments.

Rather than simply setting every car to factory specifications, Ben takes the time to discuss what the customer wants from their car and works towards a setup that suits them.

We've had some great feedback recently from customers who have had their geometry set up by Ben:

"The steering setup is perfect."

"For a year I've tried to get a specific setup from a number of places and Ben got it exactly how I wanted it with his great knowledge of the affect of toe/camber on the rotation of the rear of the car and he really took his time to understand what I wanted and it paid off."

"The alignment Ben did feels amazing."

It's particularly nice to hear feedback like this from someone who has been trying to achieve a specific setup for over a year.

Geometry is one of those things that can make a huge difference to how a car drives without changing a single performance part.

πŸš† How Far Would You Travel? πŸš†

The last few weeks have been a little crazy here at DervTech, with cars coming to us from all over the world!

A big build from America, mechanical work and tuning from Qatar, tuning from Holland…

This F54 Clubman JCW made the journey all the way from Holland for the DervTech treatment and we were just as excited as he was. What an HONOUR to have people travelling across countries just to visit our little workshop in Ellesmere Port!

Before his journey we'd spent plenty of time discussing the car, the modifications and what would give him the best balance of performance and reliability. He'd already done his research and everything was spot on.

The modifications:
Direnza intercooler
Scorpion sports catalyst
Scorpion OPF delete pipe
OPF quiet resonator
Dinan intake resonator delete pipe
NGK91469 spark plugs gapped to 0.5mm
ITG panel filter

The night before we wished them a safe journey and invited them to come in early so we could meet properly and show them what we're all about.

We spent the morning chatting about everything. Cars, how DervTech started, how we've got to where we are today, life, cultural differences and probably a little too much politics!

Once on the dyno Chris spotted some inconsistencies with the ignition. Knowing the spark plugs were brand new, we fitted a fresh set of ignition coils to see if things improved. As expected the ignition cleaned up nicely and we could get on with tuning.

One thing worth mentioning about these cars is that contrary to popular belief, the exhaust valve doesn't remain open permanently in Sport mode. Chris calibrated it to remain open in Sport mode to reduce that restriction. We also discussed how a full 3" exhaust system would be a more efficient solution for improving flow.

He also added a subtle pop-pop on downshifts within specific RPM conditions, it's those little details and individual requests that make custom tuning different from simply uploading a generic file!

We've always said that we want people to visit us because of the work we do, not simply because we're the closest tuning company. To think people are now crossing borders and travelling thousands of miles to trust us with their cars is something we'll never take for granted.

A massive thank you for making the journey, trusting our advice and spending the day with us. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you!

βš™οΈ Smoother Than Ever βš™οΈ

This JCW came in for our custom engine and gearbox tuning, along with a fresh set of NGK91469 spark plugs.

Chris has recently been making further improvements to our custom gearbox software. Over the years we've had plenty of positive feedback from customers but we're also constantly learning more about the limits within these gearboxes, how they react to different changes and where improvements can be made.

The aim isn't just to make the gearbox shift faster. It's about improving how it manages the additional torque, refining shift behaviour and making the whole car feel better to drive.

This JCW was one of the first cars to leave with the latest version of Chris' gearbox calibration. Smoother, cleaner shifts than we've achieved before.

Once on the dyno Chris noticed in the datalogs that the ignition across the cylinders wasn't quite as clean as we'd expect. Before pushing any further we fitted a fresh set of Bosch ignition coils and ran the car again.

Straight away the ignition cleaned up across the cylinders exactly as expected and Chris could continue with the tuning.

πŸ’₯ DANGER MAP πŸ’₯

Just because your car has been tuned, makes good power and feels fast doesn't necessarily mean the software behind it is doing what it should.

This MINI arrived with an existing Stage 1 tune from another company. Before carrying out our own custom tuning, Chris decided to take a closer look at the previous software to see exactly what had been changed.

What he found was concerning and it's a good opportunity to explain why the numbers on a dyno graph aren't the only thing that matters.

What we found:

1. Fault codes had been switched off unnecessarily.

The previous tuner had disabled fault codes relating to decat and sports cat modifications, despite the car still having its standard catalytic converter fitted.

Your ECU is constantly monitoring different components and systems within the engine. When something isn't working as expected, it can trigger a fault code to help identify the problem.

By switching off certain fault codes, you're effectively telling the ECU to stop reporting particular problems. This means a fault could develop without the usual warning being given.

There was absolutely no reason for these codes to have been disabled on this car.

2. Load limits had been set too high.

Think of load as how much work the engine is being asked to do.

The ECU has various limits built into its software to control how much load the engine can request and produce under different conditions.

On this calibration, some of those limits had been increased beyond what we consider appropriate for the engine, with other related limits not correctly matched.

This can result in the ECU requesting more from the engine than it should under certain conditions, potentially increasing stress on components such as the turbocharger and engine internals.

Increasing limits doesn't automatically make more power. They need to be calibrated correctly and work together.

3. Temperature protection had been removed.

This is one of the more concerning findings.

Your engine has built in protection strategies designed to react when certain temperatures become too high.

For example if you're driving hard for a prolonged period and temperatures start climbing, the ECU can intervene to help protect the engine.

Think of it as a safety net.

The previous calibration had removed temperature protection maps, meaning some of those safeguards would no longer operate as intended.

The car might feel absolutely fine during everyday driving, but when it's pushed harder or driven in hotter conditions, those protections become particularly important.

We don't believe removing important engine protection strategies is an acceptable way of making power.

4. Pop and bang settings had been changed incorrectly.

Pop and bang software works by altering how the engine behaves when you lift off the accelerator.

It's not simply a case of switching on a few settings and suddenly getting exhaust noise.

On this calibration changes had been made to the relevant settings without correctly implementing the additional ignition re**rd needed for the intended effect.

This can cause unwanted behaviour such as revs hanging when you lift off the accelerator.

Depending on how the engine is operating, incorrect overrun calibration can also increase the risk of fuel washing oil away from the cylinder walls, known as bore wash.

That oil is there to lubricate and protect the engine. If it gets washed away, friction and wear can increase.

5. The engine was being given too much fuel.

More fuel doesn't always mean more power!

Your engine needs the correct mixture of air and fuel to burn efficiently. This mixture is controlled through something called lambda.

The previous tuner had set the fuelling excessively rich in certain areas, including at full load and at higher RPM under partial load.

In simple terms, the engine was being instructed to use more fuel than necessary.

This can cause several issues, including increased fuel consumption, spark plugs becoming contaminated with deposits, and less efficient combustion.

In more extreme circumstances, excessively rich running can also contribute to fuel dilution of the engine oil and increased engine wear.

A richer mixture can sometimes be used deliberately for component protection, but there is a difference between correctly calibrated fuelling and simply adding excessive amounts of fuel.

We removed the tune and Chris developed our own custom Stage 1 calibration, correcting the issues identified in the previous software, retaining appropriate protection strategies and ensuring the various load limits and fuelling targets worked together correctly.

πŸ“Š Stock: 209.5HP – 329.8Nm
πŸ“‰ Previous Tune: 262.3HP – 406.7Nm
πŸ“ˆ DervTech Stage 1: 278.9HP – 425.3Nm

An additional 16.6HP and 18.6Nm over the previous tune. We haven't made that extra power by simply removing safety features or pushing every limit as high as possible.

A dyno graph can show you how much power and torque a car produces, but it cannot tell you whether the software has been written correctly.

You could have two cars making exactly the same power, but one could have properly calibrated protection strategies, fuelling and load management, while the other has had important safeguards disabled.

From the driver's seat you might never know the difference until something goes wrong.

This is why Chris spends so much time analysing datalogs, understanding how the ECU responds to changes and developing our software rather than simply chasing the highest number.

A good tune isn't just about how much power your engine makes. It's about how that power is achieved and how the engine is managed while producing it.

And that's something we take very seriously at DervTech.

πŸ₯Ά COLD START πŸ₯Ά

With the weather changing, we thought it best we recycle some information from an old post we did!

As the weather gets colder you may notice that your cold start rarely actives however you never had an issue over the last few months. This is completely normal and part of the catalyst protection strategy.

In very cold temperatures cold start will stop working to avoid rapid thermal shock to the catalyst converter, which could cause cracking or premature failure.

As the weather warms, cold start is more likely to activate.

Understanding how your car works is key to keeping things working right and knowing when something is a concern.

If you are ever unsure, please drop us a message and we will do our best to help!

πŸ” Repairs First - Tuning Second πŸ”

This customer has been in and out of our inbox for well over a year. During that time we’ve helped him diagnose and fix multiple issues with the car, so he knows if something doesn’t seem right, he can always come to us for advice.

This time it was finally time for a proper visit and a tune!

We had quite a list to get through:
- Our go to engine mount upgrade package - GP3 upper engine mount and Powerflex lower bush
- Replacement rocker cover
- Full visual health check
- NGK91469 spark plugs, gapped and fitted
- Custom Stage 1 tuning

Because we already knew a bit of the car’s history, we decided to put it on the dyno before carrying out any of the work. That gave us a chance to datalog it properly and make sure there wasn’t anything else that needed addressing before tuning.

Good job we did.

The initial logs showed the short term fuel trims were outside what we consider normal and well beyond the tolerance we’re happy to tune around. Rather than ignoring it and carrying on we stopped there and replaced the existing injectors with a new set.

Once all the work was completed, it went back on the dyno.

Straight away the car was noticeably happier and the figures backed that up before we’d even started tuning.

βœ… Tuner Recommended βœ…

This customer was recommended to us by another tuner, he knows what we're good at and rather than agreeing to do the tune himself, he pointed him in our direction. Not something we see a lot of in this industry and it's refreshing! Sending someone to the person they know will do the best for that exact car. So big thank you to Jarrod at North East Tuning

This particular customer was our idea of a DREAM. He reached out with a full list of modifications, maintenance and questions. We established what the car already had and what it would need to best optimise it and give the most reliable set up moving forward.

The setup he had:
- JCW clutch
- New Flywheel
- KW V1 Coilovers
- Adjustable camber plates
- Forge control arms
- Whiteline anti-roll bar front
- Whiteline anti-roll bar rear
- MMX Adjustable drop links - front
- Whiteline Adjustable drop links - rear
- Ultra Racing front strut
- 3 piece underbody braces
- Direnza intercooler
- TPE turbo inlet
- MMX resonator delete & intake hose
- ITG panel filter
- Newly refurbished OEM turbo
- New Bosch fuel injectors
- New NGK91469 gapped to 0.5mm
- Scorpion sports cat
- Scorpion 3" Challenge non-res exhaust system

Just to name a few...the list goes on!

On arrival we carried out a compression test to ensure good health prior to tuning. On routine removal of the new "elder" ignition coils we ran into an issue however after Ben's persistence we was able to recover the broken pieces and carry out the compression test and then fit some new Bosch ignition coils instead.

Onto the dyno and we could finally put the hardware to work:
