๐ Round 5 โ Wigan Race Report
Round 5 saw the full SHRC Moto team finally back together. While the extended team was spread around the pits, it was great to have everyone back under the awning for another weekend of racing.
Steve Smith ( #671) continued to show the rewards of his hard work in training. Adapting to different machinery has helped him find another level, and he spent the entire weekend running comfortably in the midfield. In scorching temperatures, Steve kept his cool, stayed consistent and rode like a sniperโcalm, calculated and always there at the finish.
Kaycie Hillier ( #108) continued to build confidence on her new YZ65 throughout the weekend. Learning a new bike is never easy, but with every session her pace improved, and her off-road skills really started to shine. There were a few crashes along the way, but she kept getting back up and pushing harder.
Sunday brought some great battles and another step forward in confidence, before a last-race crash left her with a bump to the head and a mild concussion. Thankfully sheโs recovering well, and in true racer fashion, sheโs already asking when she can race againโฆ so it clearly didnโt knock too much sense into her! ๐
Jenson Knowles โ โThe Bulletโ ( #282) was back on top form. The new suspension setup transformed the bike and his confidence. Saturday produced finishes of 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, narrowly missing out to a mini road bike, but it was enough to secure 1st Overall in the Joiner Minis.
Sunday, however, was a different story. After chasing an ongoing electrical fault, we have now narrowed it down to a failing CDI coil. Jenson jumped onto the 65cc machine and proved that outright horsepower isnโt everything. Despite racing in both the kidsโ classes and the adult group, more technical gremlins appearedโthis time brake issuesโforcing us to call it a day. The pace was there, the reliability wasnโt.
Ade Deeley ( #555) proved that tying the knot doesnโt loosen the throttle! After missing the previous three rounds, Ade returned absolutely on fire. Straight back into the thick of the action at the front of the B Group, enjoying some brilliant battles with Neil Mealon and Jay Wilsonโthe battle of the Kent lads. It was great to see Ade back where he belongs.
Dean Hillier ( #108) continued to reap the rewards of over 12 months of research and development with the Yamaha. The bike has finally come alive, and so has the rider. Saturdayโs results didnโt quite reflect the pace after a few joker cards were played by others, finishing 8th overall.
Sunday was another step forward. With finishes of 6th, 8th and 5th, Dean was fighting with the front group all day. There were some fantastic wheel-to-wheel battles with Richard Blakeman, and the pace to run with the top five is now firmly there. Looking at the lap times, the gap to the front continues to shrink, and confidence in the Yamaha package is growing every meeting.
Overall, it was another positive weekend for the whole team. The hard work behind the scenes is paying off, every rider has taken another step forward, and the speed is getting closer to the front with every round.
