A very successful day yesterday in Nottingham, co-hosting a safeguarding course for driving instructors alongside Neil Wightman, and organised by Sam Malik.
It was fantastic to see 30 driving instructors taking time out of their busy schedules to attend and develop their knowledge and understanding of safeguarding.
What was particularly encouraging was the conversations around why safeguarding isn’t a compulsory DVSA qualification for driving instructors, something those attending felt strongly about.
As driving instructors, we work with children, young adults and vulnerable people every day. Safeguarding isn’t just about protecting our pupils, it’s also about protecting ourselves and having the knowledge to recognise concerns, respond appropriately and know who to report them to.
There were some really good conversations throughout the day, with plenty of information and ideas for instructors to take away and incorporate into their own driving schools.
It was great to see so many instructors getting involved, asking questions and sharing their experiences. All the instructors showed their commitment to professional development and raising standards within our industry.
Safeguarding should be part of every driving instructor’s professional development, not something we only think about when something goes wrong.
