At our Annual Dinner in March 2026, we were proud to recognise Eddie Hawthorne with the Sue Brownson Award—celebrating not just his achievements, but the values behind them.

Eddie’s journey is a powerful example of the impact mentorship and strong leadership can have.

He credits much of his success to the guidance of a trusted mentor, whose advice continues to shape his approach today.

Congratulations again, Eddie, on a well-deserved recognition, and thank you to our headline sponsor LKQ UK and Ireland.

Help Shape the Future of the IMI Website

We're redesigning the navigation menu on the IMI website and would love to hear from people who use the site regularly.

Join one of our informal user testing workshops, where we'll walk you through the current navigation menu and several new prototype designs we're considering. We'll be looking for your honest first impressions on things like usability, clarity and ease of navigation.

There’s no preparation needed, no technical knowledge required, and no right or wrong answers — we simply want your feedback to help us create a better experience for our users.

During the session, you'll be asked to review the different options and complete a short feedback document to share your thoughts and suggestions.

Register for one of the workshops below and help shape the future of the IMI website:

The IMI’s CEO Nick Connor has written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden MP, alongside senior automotive industry leaders, to raise shared concerns about current apprenticeship reform proposals.

Automotive apprenticeships are critical to building a skilled, competent and safety-conscious workforce, particularly as the sector responds to rapid technological change across electric vehicles, connected and digital systems, and emerging hydrogen technologies. At a time when vehicles are becoming more complex, the need for rigorous training and robust, independent assessment is increasing, not reducing.

In our open letter, the IMI and signatories call for reform that:
• Maintains rigorous, independent end-point assessment
• Protects the depth and quality of training required to achieve real occupational competence
• Ensures standards reflect the safety-critical nature of automotive work
• Respects employer-led recommendations throughout approval and reform processes

Reform should strengthen apprenticeships, not dilute them. With the right safeguards in place, we can create a system that is responsive and flexible while protecting public safety, workforce capability and employer confidence.

If your organisation shares these concerns and would like to join the IMI and industry partners in supporting this call at a later stage, please get in touch with the IMI’s Public Affairs and Research team.
