Dealing with a failed Insulation Resistance (IR) test during a habitation check can be frustrating, but catching it early is exactly why these inspections matter.

​An IR failure means electrical current is leaking where it shouldn't. While things like moisture or pests are common culprits, on this recent occasion, the failure was down to thermal stress and persistent overheating.

​When circuits run too hot—whether from overloading, high-resistance connections, or environmental heat—the insulation material suffer



s. Over time, it becomes brittle, cracks, and can even cause carbonised tracking (where arcing leaves highly conductive carbon paths behind). Once insulation breaks down chemically like this, the cable is compromised and must be replaced to prevent a serious electrical hazard.
