MOT due soon? Around three in ten cars fail first time, and the usual culprits are things you can check at home: bulbs, tyre tread, wipers, washer fluid, and seatbelts. The new guide walks through the ten-minute checks that catch most fails before the tester does.

One thing you cannot ignore is a warning light. Engine management, ABS, or airbag lights that stay on are automatic fails, so get the fault read before test day, not after.

Tyre faults are one of the biggest causes of UK car accidents — and almost all of them give plenty of warning if you know what to look for. The new blog walks through tread depth, pressures, sidewall damage, ageing rubber, slow punctures and what uneven wear is trying to tell you.

The 20p test is genuinely useful and takes about ten seconds per tyre. If the outer band of the coin disappears into the tread, you are above 3mm. If you can see it, the tyre is getting close to the limit.
