Economy tuning is not a magic trick. It is about where the torque sits.

If your engine only comes alive at 2,500rpm, you drive it harder to get moving. Bring usable torque lower down and the same journey happens at lower revs with less throttle. On fleet work that typically shows up as 10 to 15 percent fuel savings, and private drivers doing a steady motorway commute often see the benefit too, though what you get depends heavily on how you drive.

"Is remapping safe for my engine?" The honest answer: it depends on the engine and who writes the file.

A Stage 1 calibration works within the mechanical limits of the standard hardware. It is not a case of winding boost up until something gives. That is why we run a full diagnostic health check before we write anything: if the turbo, injectors, clutch or DPF are already struggling, tuning on top of that is a bad idea and we will say so rather than take the booking.

We hear that most weeks. The SCR system has a lot of parts that can fail: the pump, the dosing injector, the tank heater, the level sensor and the NOx sensors front and rear. Swap one and leave another marginal, and the light returns a few hundred miles later.

Stage 1 or Stage 2? For nearly everyone reading this, Stage 1.

Stage 1 is software only, calibrated to work with the standard hardware your vehicle left the factory with. Nothing bolted on, nothing taken off. Turbocharged engines typically gain 20 to 30 percent power and torque, and the car still behaves like a car.

Stage 2 is for vehicles that have already had supporting hardware fitted, such as exhaust or intake work. The software is written around those parts. Putting a Stage 2 file on an otherwise standard vehicle is not a bargain, it is a mismatch.

A warning light is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

The generic code reader at a parts shop will tell you something like "EGR flow insufficient".
