Two clutch presses were doing one important job: matching speeds inside an unsynchronised gearbox. Releasing the clutch in neutral reconnects the engine to the input shaft, allowing its speed to be adjusted before the next gear engages.

Synchromesh performs that matching with friction. Our new explanation uses gearbox and synchroniser demonstrations from the public-domain film Spinning Levers (1936). The archive footage is mechanical context, not a filmed double-clutch pedal sequence.

That enormous steering wheel had a practical job. Before power assistance became common, its larger radius gave the driver more leverage at the rim. The trade-off was extra hand travel, and the steering gear, tyres and geometry still mattered.

Period driving footage from When You Know (1936), with our original narration and labelled comparison. Would you choose a big classic wheel or a compact modern one?

A spring can soften a bump and still leave a car bouncing. The shock absorber controls that movement. This remarkably clear 1938 model demonstration makes the difference visible: watch the wheels, then watch the trace above them.

Edited from the public-domain film Over the Waves, with new explanatory labels and an original cover.
