๐ TURNING INTO A NEW ROAD? THINK 3 THINGS!
When youโre approaching a junction and preparing to turn into a new road, thereโs a lot to take in. You should always be making full observations โ checking for approaching vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, obstructions, road markings, traffic lights and any other signs or hazards that could affect your decision.
But to help you prepare for the turn, try to make these three key checks part of your routine:
1๏ธโฃ CAN YOU TURN INTO THE ROAD?
Before turning, check whether you are actually allowed to enter. Look for No Entry, No Right Turn, No Left Turn or other restrictions. Also watch for time restrictions, as some turning restrictions only apply at certain times.
2๏ธโฃ WHAT TYPE OF ROAD ARE YOU TURNING INTO?
Is it a one-way road, two-way road, dead-end road or another type of road? Knowing this helps you decide how to position your vehicle, what to expect further ahead and whether you may need to plan for turning around if itโs a dead end.
3๏ธโฃ WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT?
Donโt assume the speed limit stays the same. It could change from 20 mph to 30 mph, or vice versa, as you enter the new road. Look for speed-limit signs and road features that help you identify the correct limit.
๐ก These are not the ONLY things you should observe. They are three key things to prioritise while you continue making full, effective observations around you.
The great thing is that these three pieces of information are often close to the junction or entrance to the road, so identifying them early can help you prepare your position, speed and approach before you actually make the turn.
Think ahead. Read the road. Make safe decisions. ๐
