Last week we had Mike Jones in with his mega low mileage little red number.

He was initially booked in for us to remove his tuning box and carry out a custom tune.

He’d been experiencing boost issues and felt the car just wasn’t right. He’d bought it like this and hadn’t modified it himself, but he knew something wasn’t adding up.

Where do I start? 🫣

As always, we put the car on the dyno first:

A. So we can get a feel for the car and see how it’s running.

B. To show the owner exactly where he stands before we touch anything.

As soon as the dyno run started, I could instantly tell his suspicions were right!

The little IHI was absolutely screaming its head off, way outside the compressor map, running lean and closing the throttle. It made great numbers though 🫣

The customer was advised, and I explained that this was almost certainly going to end up being a “de-tune” because there was no way I was going to replicate those figures while running the car safely.

We removed the tuning box and ran the car again. Once again, it made good numbers 🤷🏼‍♂️ but it was incredibly laggy…

Turns out it had also been remapped! 😅

And this is where the fun started, for the third time this year, we found another locked ECU 👀

Although we’ve found a solution for reading these locked ECUs, writing back to them is impossible, so once again it meant another hefty and completely unnecessary bill for the customer, I do hope people are being made aware of this when having there car tuned 🫣

A second-hand ECU was supplied, programmed, and tuned to suit.

As predicted, we actually lost some power on this one, but the customer reported:
“Just wanted to say what a job you’ve done. It absolutely drives night and day different and feels great. Thank you.”

It’s not all about big boost and headline figures. It’s about proper AFRs, proper boost control, and a proper understanding of how these little cars, ECUs and engines should be tuned.

Have a great weekend 😎

2019 Abarth 595c in for a ADE260 turbo + mapping

We dyno’d this last week just to get a base run from it and although it was making healthy numbers it was running really lean, so much so it had cracked the turbine housing 🫤

New ade260 on , 390cc injectors and a full fresh tune, a little down on what we usually see due to the usual 2.5” centre and bottle neck rear but I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a nice improvement 👊🏽

It’s actually running less boost now than it was on the stock garret / previous tune and Afrs are super smooth 😎

Just looking for some honest feedback from fellow Abarth enthusiasts / followers

As many of you know, there are some seriously well-built Abarths out there with forged engines, big turbo setups, suspension upgrades, brake packages and thousands invested. The problem is that when it comes time to sell, they can be a difficult market because most buyers would rather build their own car from scratch.

I'm considering a new idea and wanted to see what people think.

Rather than flooding the market with constant competitions, I'd be looking at doing only 3–4 exclusive Abarth draws per year, focusing on genuinely special cars with very high odds compared to most competition sites.

The aim would be to help owners of highly modified cars achieve a fair value while giving enthusiasts the chance to own a properly built Abarth for a fraction of its value.
Would this be something you'd be interested in entering?

A few questions:

Would you enter a competition for a modified Abarth?

What ticket price would you consider reasonable?

Would you prefer fewer competitions with better odds?

What sort of abarths would you like to see featured?

Be brutally honest — I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts before taking the idea any further.

Fu**ed Up Friday 😂

Back in April, we had Una Brau in for an ADE260 conversion. Everything went smoothly, but it wasn't quite making the numbers we'd normally expect. You could also hear it struggling and choking a bit at high RPM.

The car still had the usual 2.5" centre section that bottlenecked down to around 2" at the rear section, so we advised that to get the full potential from the setup and turbo, it really needed a full 2.5" exhaust system.

He opted for one of our systems, and we arranged a date for him to come down and wait while we fitted it and checked the map. Not something I normally do, but with a 6-hour round trip, I thought:

"It'll be fine — an hour in the workshop and an hour on the dyno." 🫣

First issue: the front pipe on our exhaust had been made incorrectly.

A quick call to our fabricator, who (eventually 😂) held his hands up and said, "Bring it over, I'll make you a new one." Fair play mistakes happen. New front section made, James fitted the exhaust, and away we went.

Onto the dyno...

Immediately, the car wasn't right.

FFS, what now? 😅

It was really lazy and nothing like it had been before or what it should have been. A boost pressure check revealed a tiny leak on a vacuum hose, but nothing major.

So we went all in Swapped the N75, Changed the actuator, Changed the dump valve, Tweaked the map, The whole nine yards

Still exactly the same. 🙄

By 4pm I turned to him and said:

"Looks like I'll be taking you to the train station, mate. Sorry."

Then I said to James:

"Just put that pressure tester on again and I'll open the throttle. Let's see if there's an inlet manifold leak."

Boom. 💥

The ni**le on the take off for the Forge dump valve had worked itself loose. 🙄

Ni**le lock-tighted, Map back to where it was, everything bolted back together, and the results were exactly where they should have been.

Thought I'd be home for dinner... 🤣

The treats and alcohol made up for it, thanks again Lee 💙🫶

Anyway, have a great weekend, people!

"Custom Dyno Tune"

If they're not logging boost, AFR, and ignition timing, you have to ask yourself what are they actually doing 🫣

Here's another car showing decent BHP figures on paper, but the graph / data tells us a very different story

* AFRs lean and are all over the place
* Torque curve looks like a roller coaster
* Actual torque is 30 Nm down on previously claimed figures

To make matters worse, the lean AFRs have resulted in the rear turbo housing cracking in four places 🫤 (see attached photos).

The worrying part is that the customer would never have known and would have carried on driving the car. It was only because he wanted to upgrade the turbo that this issue has come to light. Had he not done so, it could have led to even further damage.

Numbers alone don't tell the full story…

Data and knowledge matter.

Brilliant but boiling hot day at Croft today! 🥵🥵🥵

Great day… just not the results 🙃

I don’t really cope with the heat that well these days and was struggling for any sort of momentum . I Started off well, but the fatigue and heat were definitely taking their toll by the afternoon

Frustrating really, because the demo car was performing brilliantly today , all down to the pilot unfortunately 🙃

I left it all on the line on the last run and managed a 1:45, which would’ve put me in 4th overall. However, a couple of minor sideways moments 😬 earned me a DQ. Although I Didn’t gain anything from it, rules are rules!

So, last place it is for me… we go again for Round 3 at Cadwell. Hopefully in the race car this time, and hopefully I can put in a better performance.

Congrats to Carl Douthwaite, who benefited from my DQ and came home 5th — I’ll never hear the end of that now 🤣 joking aside side well done mate 👊🏽

Big thanks to James Beanland on the spanners, and to all the sponsors for their support 🫶
