One of the most misunderstood road signs is this one!
The No Through Road sign.
Almost every learner driver I teach initially thinks this sign means there is a T-junction ahead.
It doesn’t.
A No Through Road sign simply means that the road you’re about to enter does not provide a route through to somewhere else. In other words, at some point you will reach a dead end, cul de sac, private access, turning area, or similar restriction.
You can still drive into the road.
People may live there.
Businesses may operate there.
Parking may be available there.
The sign is not telling you that entry is prohibited.
It’s simply warning you that you won’t be able to continue through to another road.
Why does this matter?
Because some learners see the sign and immediately start looking for a junction ahead, when they should be concentrating on the road they’re actually driving on.
Understanding road signs is an important part of becoming a safe driver. The more information you can gather from signs and road markings, the easier it becomes to plan ahead and avoid surprises.
Next time you see a No Through Road sign, remember:
✅ You can enter the road
✅ People may live or work there
✅ It does not mean a T-junction ahead
✅ It means the road does not continue through to another route
