Day 11, the final day of Lotus Liège-Brescia-Liège Rally 2027, sees the cars make their way back up the original 1958 route from near Karlsruhe in Germany through the magnificent forested hills of Germany's Rhineland, into the hills of southern Belgium. The wonderful sweeping, swooping, twisting roads that the 1958 route followed were well-chosen: back then, they were main roads but now they have been bypassed and are quiet and a delight to drive - especially in Lotus cars that revel in twisty, smooth roads.
On the rally next year (May 26 - June 7, sign up now via www.classicrallypress.co.uk !) the day will begin with a second Special Test at Kartbahn Liedolsheim - a great circuit for cars as well as karts - and will end at a location outside Liège, just as the 1958 event did. It'll probably be the Abbaye de Stavelot, which now contains the Spa race circuit museum and is a suitably elegant and impressive location for the rally finish - crews will then enjoy a final night and prizegiving dinner in the lovely Blooma Hotel in Liège, followed by breakfast and heading home in the morning.
For the recce, however, Fifi needed to be back at school next day, so we had to complete the route check and head straight to Calais for the Eurotunnel and a 3.5hr drive back to Somerset!
Our Excel has performed brilliantly - biggest worries being plummeting oil pressure when caned up mountains and increasing oil consumption (the two may be linked, as the 20W50 mineral oil may have broken down too much, possibly due to a clogged oil cooler?). It also revealed a sense of humour, when for the first time in the trip it failed to proceed - when we needed to drive out of Le Shuttle train, with half a dozen cars and c50 Italian motorcycles trapped behind us!
The engine turned over and started but died instantly - no fuel pump, and there was no dashboard either. A quick dig under the bonnet found no loose wires, and by then the very efficient Eurotunnel team had reversed a van all the way back to us and towed us out, to release all behind us. While they went to get a recovery truck, I tried wiggling the wires on the back of the ignition switch - success! The Excel had had its fun and we drove home, through torrential rain and floods, without missing a beat!
Now we're home, we'd welcome all enquiries from Lotus enthusiasts interested in joining the full event next year 🙂
