🚗 CASE STUDY: 2020 Citroën C5 Aircross in Tredegar, dead despite a brand new battery 🔧
No dash lights, no ignition, no crank. The battery had been replaced only a week earlier, but a new battery wasn't the fix, because the battery was never the problem.
🔍 The cause
A fault between the BSI (body control module) and the electronic steering column lock (ESCL) was keeping the lock/unlock modules awake. The car never went to sleep, so it kept draining the battery.
Once the voltage dropped far enough, the BSI lost contact with the steering lock (fault B181A:87), went into anti-theft lockout and cut ignition power.
📋 Also logged by the voltage drop:
🔹 B1400:64 (airbag ECU): CAN+ supply voltage signal not coherent
🔹 U1F00:00 (airbag ECU): fault not recorded in the built-in systems interface log
🔹 B1003:55 (telematics unit): secure special function fault
🔹 B1003:55 (motorised boot unit): special function incorrect or not carried out
🛠️ The fix
✅ Topdon Tornado 9000 used to hold a stable supply throughout diagnostics
✅ Checked all BSI fuses and the steering lock's mechanical operation
✅ Re-established BSI to ESCL communication and cleared the lockout
✅ Drain test confirmed the modules now go to sleep, with no more battery drain
✅ Recalibrated the powered tailgate
✅ Cleared all voltage-related faults, confirmed with a full rescan
✅ Engine and ABS: no faults
🔋 The cost of the drain
Battery tested on a Topdon BT600: 35% state of health. One week old, and permanently damaged by being repeatedly drained. We've advised replacing it now that the cause is fixed.
A new battery treats the symptom. Diagnosis finds the cause. 💡
