Real case from our workshop - Why generic oil can cut your brakes in a Ford Ranger.

Symptoms: Hard brake pedal (zero braking assist) while driving, plus an oil pressure warning light.

What we found:
Take a look at the picture. That’s the inside of the vacuum pump and oil filter casing. Instead of clean engine oil, it’s completely packed with thick, black sludge and hundreds of shredded rubber pieces.

What actually happened?
These 2.0L engines have a "wet belt" (a timing belt that runs directly inside the engine oil).
It works fine, but only under two strict conditions:

-You must use the exact Ford-spec oil. Generic oils or the wrong additives will literally dissolve the rubber over time.
-You can't stretch the oil changes. Old, contaminated oil turns aggressive and eats the belt.

In this Ranger, the belt started peeling apart. The rubber debris clogged the oil pickup and completely blocked the vacuum pump. The result? The pump stopped working, the brake booster lost vacuum, and the driver suddenly had no brakes in a heavy 2.5-ton pickup.

The reality of skipping proper maintenance:

The Bill:
A cheap, regular oil change could have prevented this. Now, the owner is looking at a massive bill for stripping the engine, flushing the entire lubrication system, a new timing belt kit, a new vacuum pump, and checking if the turbos or bearings aren't starved of oil.

Our advice if you drive an EcoBlue Ford (Ranger or Transit):
Forget long-life intervals: Drop the factory 18,000-mile recommendations. Change your oil every 8,000 to 10,000 miles maximum.

Zero compromise on oil: Use only premium oil that meets the exact Ford specification for wet belts (we use Castrol formulated specifically for this).

Don't wait for the red light on your dash or a hard brake pedal. If your Ford is due for a service, drop us a message or book your slot at Automax Garage – Castrol Service Centre.
