Learn To Drive With Chris

Last one of this little series

Examiners have a pass quota!!! I hear it all the time.

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
Not in a million years is this true.

Examiners just watch your driving and how you deal with scenarios, if you drive safe, dont break any rules, they can't fail you.

Every test is different, just because someone failed for something that someone else didnt fail for, that doesnt mean there is a quota, just means the scenario was more serious.

I thought I'd start posting some of the things that learners ask me because they've heard it from someone or watch it on Tik Tok and hopefully clear up some myths!

𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕀'𝕧𝕖 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕕 𝕚𝕤.....
Examiners try to trick you on your test and want you to drive different to how you have been taught.

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
Absolutely no chance. I hear this alot on lessons, but examiners want you to pass, same as me and every instructor, if they wanted you to drive differently to how you have been taught you would have been taught differently, instructors teach differently but ultimately teach the same skills.

They can't really trick you on test, they just follow their 'script', they aren't trying to catch you out or prove you wrong.

Exaggerating my mirror checks or tying my hair back, or wearing dangling ear rings will really impress the examiner and make it really obvious I'm checking

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
Examiners, like myself are trained how to check for mirror or blindspot checks, if you actually look in your mirrors its obvious you are checking them.

If you are exaggerating your mirrors its more likely you arent paying attention to the road in front of you or noticing what you need to notice in your mirrors.

Remember to actually look in your mirrors or blindspots, rather than just making it look like you checking your mirrors.

Taking my test in rush hour will make the test shorter, or theres easier test times in the day

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
By UK law, the minimum driving time for a standard category B (car) practical driving test is not less than 30 minutes behind the wheel, so no matter what you'll be out for 30minutes.

The DVSA suggest the time you take your test should make no difference, if you are 'Ready to pass' you'll be fine whenever you take it. My personal opinion is I wouldn't take it in rush hour as there are far too many people 'rushing' to get somewhere, when they are where they need to be making it quite stressful on the roads, once they get where they need to be, in theory it should be less stressful on the road.

Eating and banana and bringing a bottle of water with me in the car will help my nerves on test day!

𝕄𝕒𝕪𝕓𝕖 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
I think bananas are disgusting, so I've never tried this, I do like banana milkshake so maybe that would work, however Bananas contain tryptophan, which the body converts into serotonin (a hormone that improves mood and calms the nervous system), alongside vitamin B6 to support neurotransmitter production.
Taking a bottle of water on test, absolutely you'll get asked to stop 3 or 4 times on the test, during that stop have a swig and take 30 seconds to compose yourself for the next part, so there maybe some truth in doing that.

I'll fail if I go the wrong way.

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
Every single driver has gone the wrong way at some point.
If you go wrong, do it safely or correctly, for example if you are told to go left and you go right thats no problem unless you signal left and go right or if decide you'll switch direction without checking mirrors and ensuring your safety first.

Providing you go the wrong way and follow the correct process, you'll be alright.

I'll fail if I hold the steering wheel with 1 hand or not at a 10-2 position.

ℕ𝕠𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕖.....
You must remain in control of the car at all times, hold the wheel however you want, if you end up on the wrong side of the road or swerving all over the place because you've decided to hold it on the horn or with 1 hand at the bottom or top, then that's a problem. You must always be in control of your car so holding the wheel with two hands is often the best way.

How many of these would you get correct?

Part of the driving test is Show Me, Tell Me Questions, have a go and see would you pass?
