Island Fuels 6th Birthday 🎂 🥳
⛽️Delivering Over 2.6 million ltrs a year to just over 5,000 drops a year,
ONE IDEA.
ONE MASSIVE GAMBLE.
SIX YEARS LATER…
On 8th October 2020, at just 33 years old, Paul Cassidy started Island Fuels.
At the time, I don't think I fully understood just how big a gamble I was taking.
My partner Naomi Mccarroll and I had just had a baby called maverick. She was off work, we had a young family, bills still had to be paid — and I was walking away from the security of a job to try and build something of my own.
I'd spent almost six years working as a fuel tanker driver for another fuel company, so I knew the industry.
But knowing an industry is one thing.
Building a business from nothing is another.
There was no established customer base.
No guarantee anyone would buy from me.
No big company behind me.
And no safety net.
It had to work.
I remember almost 90% of people questioning whether the idea would work.
And honestly, there were probably moments when I questioned it myself with sleepless nights.
But I believed I could make it work.
I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel.
I just believed I could make the wheel turn a little better.
Give people a better service.
Answer the phone.
Turn up when we said we would.
Work hard.
Look after people.
And most importantly, build something people could trust.
So I started.
One customer.
One delivery.
One day at a time.
And slowly, something happened.
Customers came back.
They recommended us to friends, family and neighbours.
That first little idea started becoming a real business.
Fast forward six years…
By the end of 2026, we're on course to deliver almost:
⛽️ 2.6 MILLION LITRES OF HEATING OIL A YEAR .
And that's just heating oil.
It doesn't include all the white diesel and red diesel we've delivered along the way.
But when I look at 2.8 million litres, I don't just see a number.
I see six years of early mornings.
Late nights.
Freezing cold days.
Long days behind the wheel delivering up to 40 customers a day to keep the delivery time down.
Phones that wouldn't stop ringing.
Problems that always needed solving.
Mistakes that needed learning from.
And thousands upon thousands of deliveries.
But most of all…
I see people.
I see the customers who took a chance on a brand-new company six years ago.
The customers who stayed with us.
The customers who recommended us.
The people who supported us when we were still trying to prove ourselves.
And I see my family.
Because behind every business story, there's usually a family story too.
My partner backed me when I took that gamble.
We had a baby, one income had stopped, and I had no idea where this journey was going to take us.
All I knew was that I had to make it work.
And six years later, I can finally look back and say:
I'm glad I took the chance.

Maybe you've been thinking about starting a business.
Maybe you've been waiting for the perfect time.
Maybe you're worried about failing.
Maybe you're thinking you're not ready yet.
I wasn't ready either.
You don't need to reinvent the wheel.
You don't need to have everything figured out.
You don't need to know exactly where you'll be in five or ten years.
Sometimes you just need to believe that you can do something a little bit better.
Start small.
Work hard.
Learn as you go.
And give yourself a chance.
Because six years ago, Island Fuels was nothing more than an idea that had to work.
Today, it's a growing, independent, family-owned Manx business delivering millions of litres of fuel across the Isle of Man.
And I honestly couldn't be prouder.
