"Craggsy, when should I change my timing belt?"
It's one of the most common questions we get asked.
And
"My van is running fine so do I really need to replace the timing belt?"
Timing belts have manufacturer replacement intervals, usually based on age, mileage, or whichever comes first. However, if a belt becomes contaminated, damaged or shows signs of wear, it may need replacing sooner.
Today we're replacing the timing belt and water pump on a VW Crafter.
Here's why they are usually replaced together:
On many vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. That means both parts are working together every time the engine is running.
If the water pump starts to fail after you've fitted a new timing belt, the timing belt often has to come back off to replace it meaning you're paying for much of the same labour twice.
That's why we recommend replacing both together where they're connected.
What happens if a timing belt snaps?
Unfortunately, on most engines it isn't just a case of fitting another belt.
A snapped timing belt can allow the pistons and valves to collide, often resulting in severe engine damage and a repair bill running into the thousands.
Replacing it at the manufacturer's recommended interval is far cheaper than replacing an engine.
