“A V8 engine won't fit in a Z3,” they said. So we just went ahead and did it, unveiling the V8 Roadster in 1997. Sure, it took a lot of manual labor and even more expertise to get the 228 kW/310 hp, 440 Nm performance-enhanced engine from the 540i to fit into the Z3’s engine bay. 0–100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h were impressive. Added to that were our racing suspension, 18-inch Type II racing wheels, an aerodynamic conversion, and a sophisticated interior in steel-blue nubuck leather. Want more? In 1995, AC Schnitzer’s most famous concept car, the CLS II, made its way from the Green Hell straight onto the road. This time, it was based on the BMW M3 3.2. The heart of the CLS II was its engine, featuring a special control unit program, precisely balanced connecting rods, a finely balanced crankshaft, and a redesigned intake system with a large airbox. Power: 257 kW/350 hp and 355 Nm. This allowed it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 290 km/h. Significantly improved downforce, lightweight construction using carbon fiber and aluminum, perfect suspension tuning, and 18-inch Type II racing wheels—all these components (and much more) have made the CLS II a thoroughbred race-touring car for the road. In 1993, a dream came true: AC Schnitzer built the CLS, the first road-legal race-touring car. At the same time, the CLS was our first concept car. Incidentally, the shortcut stands for “Coupé Lightweight Silhouette.” The base was the BMW M3 E36 with a 3.0-liter engine, which was tuned to 235 kW/320 hp. The car gained 160 kg in weight reduction and was equipped with a high-performance braking system and a racing suspension.
