This is not what you want on your Aston Martin!

When we get a phone call regarding a noisy diff on an auto gearbox VH platform aston, the hope is that an oil change to the latest spec oil will solve it and it often does. However, this diff is past that point and we will be pulling it out the car for a strip down and hopefully rebuild it to save a replacement at £16,500 for the part alone (and there is none available 🫠)

Spot the issue! 👀

This V8 Vantage was recovered to us from a European road trip the owner was enjoying after the dash board threw up ABS/TC lights on the dash and the car was accelerating at points on its own (uncommanded acceleration).

We first came across uncommanded acceleration in VH era Aston Martins a couple of years ago and it’s caused by the reluctor ring cracking and loosing its clamping force on the inner race of the wheel bearing. This means that as the wheel rotates the reluctor ring does not always spin at the exact same rate, the car is recording an incorrect reading of wheel speed and the car applies throttle to increase that wheel speed, making the whole car accelerate on its own accord! A very disconcerting situation and a big safety issue if not corrected.

A new wheel bearing sorted this issue and the car is back to behaving as it should but if you ever have this issue occur to you, dip the clutch (if a manual) or press the neutral button on the dash (if Sportshift or Auto) as pressing hard on the brake pedal won’t necessarily help you!

20 Years of Aston Martin Expertise

This year marks 20 years since David Appleby Engineering first became involved with Aston Martins

Our journey began through a long-standing relationship with Prodrive, built while rallying Subaru World Rally Cars. That connection led to one of Aston Martin’s most unique competition cars—the Aston Martin Rally GT.

The knowledge and experience gained from that programme laid the foundations for what DAE is today. For the past two decades, we’ve applied that motorsport expertise to become a world leading independent Aston Martin specialist covering VH and AM platforms

From the rally stage, race track and to the road, 20 years of Aston Martin engineering excellence.
