🔧 IF THE SUMP’S COMING OFF, YOU MAY AS WELL MAKE THE MOST OF IT 🔧

This M135i came in with a leaking sump gasket. With the sump already needing to be removed, the customer decided to take the opportunity to carry out some preventative maintenance and upgrades while everything was apart.

🚨 CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. BMW M4. ANOTHER ONE SAVED. 🚨

This BMW M4 arrived with us as a complete non-runner after being diagnosed elsewhere with an internal engine failure.

The customer initially sent us photos of the oil filter, and it didn’t take long to spot that something wasn’t right. The filter was full of metal debris, a clear sign of serious internal damage.

With the evidence pointing towards a bottom-end issue, we removed the engine and stripped it down for inspection.

What we found was shocking…

The crankshaft had snapped.

Further investigation revealed that this engine had previously been rebuilt elsewhere using mismatched components. The crank cradle (bedplate) had been taken from a different engine, something that should never be done. The engine block and crank cradle are machined together from the factory as a matched assembly, and BMW does not supply the crank cradle separately. Mixing components from different engines can lead to incorrect bearing clearances and catastrophic failure.

To make matters worse, the crankshaft had also been incorrectly reground and fitted with oversized bearings.

In short, this was an engine that should never have been installed into any vehicle, let alone a high-performance M car.

A replacement engine was sourced and fitted, and whilst it was out, we carried out preventative maintenance to give the car the best possible future.

Once completed, the car was reassembled, tested, coded, valeted and returned to the customer running exactly as a BMW M4 should.

A reminder that not all engine rebuilds are created equal. Poor workmanship can become a very expensive mistake.

🚨 F80 M3 / F82 M4 OWNERS – CHECK YOUR REAR SUBFRAME BOLTS 🚨

A common issue we’re seeing more and more on F80 and F82 chassis cars is corrosion on the rear subframe mounting bolts.

Over time, water can become trapped around the original bolt and washer design, leading to heavy corrosion. In severe cases, the bolts can seize, weaken, or even snap during removal – turning what should be a straightforward job into a much bigger repair.

BMW have since released an updated bolt design featuring a revised washer arrangement to help prevent water retention and reduce the corrosion issues found on the original setup.

On this vehicle, we replaced the original rear subframe bolts with the latest BMW updated versions as preventative maintenance, helping protect the rear axle carrier mounting points for years to come.

🚨 IS YOUR S55-POWERED BMW MAKING A TAPPING NOISE ON COLD START? 🚨

If your BMW M3, M4, M2 Competition or any S55-powered car has developed a tapping noise when started from cold, there’s a high chance your exhaust camshaft alignment has moved out of specification. 👨🏻‍🔧

This is something we are seeing and repairing WEEKLY here at DCL Tuning using the genuine BMW alignment tools and genuine BMW gaskets. ✅

Typically, the tapping noise will disappear once the engine warms up, leading many owners to ignore it… but leaving this unattended can potentially lead to further engine damage over time. ⚠️

Our repair process includes:
