π 10 Causes of Brake Noise
Brake noise is one of the most common complaints from drivers, but it should never be ignored. Sounds such as squealing, grinding, clicking, or knocking often indicate worn components, contamination, or incorrect brake installation. Diagnosing the source early helps prevent expensive repairs and ensures safe braking performance.
The most common cause is worn brake pads. Many brake pads include a wear indicator that creates a squealing sound when replacement is needed. Low-quality brake pads can also produce excessive noise due to hard friction materials. Dirty or contaminated brake components, such as pads or rotors coated with dust, grease, or oil, may squeak during braking.
Other common causes include glazed brake pads or rotors, warped or worn brake rotors, loose brake hardware, and sticking brake calipers that prevent the pads from releasing properly. Parking brake adjustment problems, surface rust after rain or washing, and dry caliper slide pins can also create unwanted brake noise. In some cases, wheel bearings or suspension components may produce sounds that are mistaken for brake problems.

Mechanic Tip: Never ignore a grinding brake noise. It often means the brake pad friction material is completely worn out and the metal backing plate is contacting the rotor. Continuing to drive in this condition can severely damage the brake discs, reduce stopping power, and significantly increase repair costs.
