OUR BULLET 350
AFTER THE CHECKUP:

The engine of the motorcycle that took us thru more than 25,000 kilometres in the past three years, was taken apart after doing almost 5,500 kilometres (after engine overhaul) to check a discomfort in the engine!

After resetting, the engine feels free and a lot less noisy. We will be doing trial runs when the weather lets up a little!

We hope the engine will not give us any further problems for the next couple of years!

LONG RIDES AT 74:

The road is open. Often lonely and without recourse. But when you have a riding partner like I have, there is always the confidence that together we can take on most of what the ride throws at us.

For those of you who are not following us: John Sudhakar 74 & Sulekha Sudhakar 72. Last riding season 4 solo rides, 11,000+ kilometres, on a bullet 350, Cast Iron. Engine design 1959, Gearbox design early 1950s.

2026 RIDES, RAJASTHAN:

March 2026 & thereabouts we rode thru 15 locations around Rajasthan starting at Jaipur. 5,200 kms 43 days. Excitement and thrills unlimited!

JAIPUR FOR YOU: The Splendour of the forts and palaces here are too difficult to show in a few photographs. However here goes:

There are three forts in Jaipur a few kilometres away from each other, the main fort being the Amber Palace and Fort. Also the City Palace.

With a history of over 500 years, these monuments are awe inspiring. One can only imagine their splendour at the peak of their grandeur & power!

For those of you who are not following us: Sudhakar (74) Sulekha (72) now.

THE ENGINE OF OUR TOURER:

We got back the engine from the lathe shop and found that there was nothing really wrong with it. Minor adjustments were done.

I believe the E20 fuel has something to do with the ceasing of the piston. So now we are mixing normal E20 fuel with and equal quantity of 95 Octane fuel to check results. We will deal with the results seperately.

I think the ideal situation for Cast Iron Overhauled engines, is to open the engine if it is even slightly problematic after (say) 3,500 kms, to check its condition and clearances. May not be possible for all! But now we know that this engine can be pushed for higher performance.

I was considering installing a 17 tooth front end sprocket as the motorcycle is slightly slow on some 450+ km runs. But now, I do not want to tax the engine. Your views?

AT 74: WORKING POWER TOOLS:

Last week I was surprised that I could work with a power angle grinder for more than two and a half hours! Stiff muscles next morning but good to go again. We are in the process of freshening up our stores' slotted angles!

This video is showing the reshaping of our long distance riding seat! Custom Seats: a hobby for the past decade or more.!!!

CHECKING OUR ENGINE:

Checking out the heart of our old faithful, I have noted a stiffness in the crank which shouldn't be there having 5,500 kms now.

It is smooth but stiff. Good that it isn't rattly or loose!!! Taking it back to the lathe shop, without opening up the engine so that they can make the required adjustments.

This is something very difficult for normal Cast Iron owners to do because they do not have the facilities to do this!!! We are looking to have this motorcycle running as noiselessly as possible for another 25 to 30,000 kms. Hoping that we have no more trouble with this trusty old steed!

The motorcycle in the background is a 1970 B1 Heavy Crank.

OUR OLD FAITHFUL:

This is our Royal Enfield Bullet 350 Cast Iron, Engine and Structural design of 1959, on which we have done many many rides. The machine has taken us through tens of thousands of kilometres.

The two times we had a problem, this old faithful brought us back to a safe place where the breakdown could be attended to. Now, after 5500 kms after overhaul, and after 43 days out in rather unfamiliar, hot and lonely roads of Rajasthan, we had a surprise problem when the mechanic took the machine for some short rides locally. A ceased piston!!! After 5,500 kms of high speed (relative) riding in the hot terrain of Rajasthan and the Thar Desert.

Now, since we haven't taken on external work like we used to, we decided to open the engine to check what went wrong.

Your views are welcome. The pump was working very well.
