⚓ Why can berthing rates vary so dramatically across the Mediterranean?

Nearly 10 times the price. Same yacht, same marina, just two months apart.

It may sound surprising, but that's a real example from a published Mediterranean marina tariff.

And while seasonal differences are common, their scale varies considerably between destinations.

Published rates show variations of around 2× in Cannes, 3× in Antibes and nearly 10× in Porto Cervo, depending on the marina, berth category and season.

So, what explains these differences?

Peak-season demand and limited capacity play a major role, especially when it comes to accommodating larger yachts in sought-after destinations.

Each marina also has its own pricing structure, reflecting its location, facilities, berth categories and seasonal calendar.

And the berthing rate is only part of the equation. Utilities and additional port services can also influence the total cost of a port call.

For captains and yacht managers, understanding these variables is an important part of planning an itinerary.

Based on published marina tariffs: Porto Cervo (2025), Port Vauban and Port Canto (2026). Comparisons refer to seasonal daily rates within each marina, not equivalent prices between destinations.

⚓ Warmer seas. Longer yachting seasons?

The Mediterranean is warming at an average rate of 0.32°C per decade, according to the latest Copernicus Ocean State Report.

Could rising sea temperatures be reshaping the traditional yachting calendar?

There are some interesting signals.

In Croatia, sailing yacht charter bookings reached 92% occupancy in September 2026, exceeding August's 88%, according to Yacht-Rent data.

But warmer seas don't necessarily mean better cruising conditions.

Autumn still brings strong regional winds, unpredictable weather windows and operational constraints that can limit cruising opportunities.

And while September is already an important month for certain Mediterranean charter markets, extending the season further into October and November is another matter.

So, are we heading towards longer Mediterranean yachting seasons, or simply a shift in the traditional calendar?

SEASON NOTES | 2026

What stood out during this Mediterranean season?

“One of the most noticeable things this year was the volume of last-minute requests, including from yachts operating in charter.

And it wasn't necessarily about unusual demands. We were often asked to arrange everyday essentials — a baby cot, a child car seat, specific provisions or dietary requirements — sometimes with very little notice before guests arrived.”

— Carolina, SCS Yachting

What does this tell us about yacht operations?

A seemingly simple request can involve several steps: finding the right supplier, checking availability, arranging delivery and coordinating with the yacht's schedule.

When the timeframe is reduced to a few hours, each of those steps becomes more demanding.

And these are details that directly influence the experience on board.

This season brought that reality into particularly sharp focus for our team. It highlighted the importance of established local relatensuiteionships, practical knowledge and coordination when time is limited.

Because in yacht agency, even the most ordinary requests can require considerable work behind the scenes.

💙 Yacht Stories | M/Y NAHLIN

From a royal romance to a floating restaurant on the Danube, NAHLIN has lived more than one extraordinary life.

Launched in 1930 by John Brown & Co. in Scotland, this 91-metre classic yacht was designed by G.L. Watson & Co. for Lady Yule, who commissioned her for extensive world cruising.

In 1936, NAHLIN entered British royal history when King Edward VIII chartered her for a Mediterranean cruise with Wallis Simpson, just months before his abdication.

A year later, she was acquired by King Carol II of Romania. She would spend decades on the Danube, eventually serving as a floating restaurant.

After an extraordinary restoration, NAHLIN returned to sea in 2010, her original character and unmistakable silhouette beautifully preserved.

And her story is still being written. In September 2026, nearly 96 years after her launch, NAHLIN arrived in Tarragona, Spain, following a Mediterranean passage from Greece.

A remarkable piece of maritime history, still sailing today. 💙

WHO DO YOU WANT BACK NEXT SEASON?

As the Mediterranean season starts to slow down, crew planning for the next one is already beginning.

Before thinking about recruitment, there is another question worth asking first: who do you want to keep?

Good crew members are not always easy to replace. And waiting until contracts end or someone has already made other plans can leave very little room to react.

This is the right time to review upcoming contract dates, understand individual intentions, plan rotations and leave, and identify the positions that may need attention over the coming months.

Recruitment will always be part of crew management.

But sometimes, the best hire for next season is the person already on board.

RUNNING A YACHT IS A FULL-TIME OPERATION.

Much of yacht management happens long before something requires attention.

Maintenance has to be planned. Costs monitored. Contractors coordinated. Documentation kept aligned. Compliance followed. Crew and operational requirements anticipated.

Individually, none of these elements defines yacht management.

The real value lies in connecting them — and maintaining that continuity throughout the life of the yacht.

Because managing a yacht is not simply about responding when something happens.

It is about knowing what needs attention before it becomes urgent.

At SCS Yachting, our management approach combines technical oversight, operational experience and regulatory knowledge to keep the yacht properly managed over time.

STILL YACHT. MOVING PARTS.

From shore, a yacht at anchor can look perfectly still.

During the season, on board, very little is.

Tender movements, crew logistics, guest transfers, changing weather, technical needs and plans that can shift throughout the day all have to be coordinated around the yacht.

It is one of the realities of an active Mediterranean season: the quieter the scene looks, the more easily we forget how much is happening behind it.

For captains and crews, a day at anchor can involve just as much coordination as a day alongside — simply of a different kind.

And good support ashore means understanding that rhythm.

Sometimes the request is simple. Sometimes it’s not.

A captain might need clarification on an administrative issue. A trusted technical contact. A berth suitable for a specific bunkering operation. Someone reliable to remake the cushions on board. Or simply an answer to a question that falls somewhere in between.

What matters is knowing where to look, who to call and being willing to help — even when the request doesn’t sit neatly within a service list.

Because relationships in yachting are built over time. Not only through the work we are appointed to handle, but through all those moments when someone knows they can pick up the phone and ask.

Sometimes the most useful answer is simply: “Let me see who can help.”

Cannes, here we come.

Next week, SCS Yachting will be at the Cannes Yachting Festival, from 8 to 13 September.

A key moment in the Mediterranean yachting calendar, and a great opportunity to reconnect with clients, captains, partners and industry professionals before the season starts to slow down.

You’ll find us at Palais 040 throughout the show.

If you’re attending Cannes this year, come and say hello.
