Subaru Forester SJ (2012 - 2018) and SK (2018 - Current)

Do you owned one? Even though these are regarded as one of the most reliable and popular Subaru Forester, it still has a few known issues that many do not know. The most notable are excessive oil consumption due to poor piston ring design and oil leaks from cam covers.

1) The cam cover/timing cover oil leaks is a simple fix. Most owners would have had them replaced by 60k-100k kms but the leaks will return and will require to reseal again. So if your Forester FB20 is still running past 150k - get them check!

2) The notable oil consumption can be resolved with two methods - using the right engine oil but will require experiments. Not all oil, different viscosity is made equal. The other long term method is to rebuilt the engine with an updated piston ring parts.

3) Carbon built-up on the intake valves - if you feel your engine hesitating, bad fuel consumption and rough idles. It is time that we look into a few components and start cleaning them!

4) CVT issues in almost inevitable but is it true? You must use the correct CVT transmission fluid and you must change with the right method. We've seen how a completely good CVT was damaged due to negligence by inexperience mechanic.

5) Last but not least, owners must be responsible to conduct visual check such as coolant, aircon, brakes, tyres, suspension and the AWD system. Remember to never towed the car with two wheels rolling on the ground! Always request for a flat bed carrier!

1) From left to right, a new WRX variant is on the way with a TY85 transmission borrowed from previous STI models.

2) In the middle is a new BRZ derivative, serving as a follow-up to the STI Sport Type RA (Record Attempt) special edition launched in Japan last year. Subaru built only 300 units and sold them through a lottery system.

3) On the right in the is the mysterious car of the trio. It’s a hatchback with a manual transmission described as a new “affordable base car.” To keep costs down, Subaru is apparently reviewing the materials used throughout the vehicle and simplifying the standard equipment list.

Many of us probably in the 40s-50s spent some our earlier years watching The Subaru GC8 dominating the 1990s WRC scene with legendary drivers like Colin McRae and Richard Burns. Some of us dreamt of owning the road-going GC8 WRX and STI "street built rally cars".

Raise your hand if you were a fan or better still an owner of a GC8!

Should we gather these classic in our SBR Technic workshop?

Attention to Subaru XV1, do you know your engine is at risk if its continue to 'consume' engine oil? This issue is caused by the lower part of the piston ring's inability to expand due to built up. When this happens, oil seep out slowly until "low engine oil" warning lights up.

Other than that, the XV1 CVT is also known to cause problems. The issue with the CVT is caused by the solenoid valve. If your XV1 has surpassed 100,000-150,000km mileage without issue, it's almost time to have them check.
