GLEN COLLINSON WINS RACE THREE

With a race win and a second place for both Glen Collinson and Alex Fougere, the weekend’s decider would all come down to Race Three. Glen prevailed over Alex Fougere and Blair Gribble-Bowring , but there were some tense battles throughout the thrilling 10-lapper.

Coming into Race Three, track limits warnings from Race Two for Peter Bennett & Glen Collinson meant both drivers had to be on their game, as one more infringement mean could mean a penalty. Fortunately, they both ran flawlessly.

Glen lined up in P1 alongside Alex P2. As Glen recounted after the race, “I was concentrating on being first into turn one”. Remain first he did, leading Alex into the turn, with Peter Bennett, Blair Gribble-Bowring and Geoff Spencer in tow.

Seasoned racer Collinson kept extending his lead lap after lap, but not far behind him, positions were tight.

Alex had Blair Gribble-Bowring and Peter Bennett looming large in his rearview mirror. Solid driving managed to keep Alex in 2nd. But Blair and Peter - both in Ford Falcon FG utes - were having a fierce battle. Blair managed to keep the upper hand in 3rd, despite the pressure, making for a riveting race for spectators. Yet further back there was another driver who provided some engaging action.

The V8 Utes share the grid with the NZ Sixes. That not only means spirited Ford vs Holden battles across two categories. The front runners in the Sixes can even challenge come of the heavy-hitting V8 Utes. Seriously.

Late in the race, NZ Six racer Christina Orr in a V6 Commodore began breathing down the neck of Bruce McRae. Christina would catch Bruce on the corners, then Bruce would streak away on the straights. The battle continued right to the chequered flag, with Bruce retaining the upper hand. Just.

So Race Three concluded an exciting opening round for the V8 Utes. Congratulations Glen, great racing Alex & Blair, and welcome to the category Peter. We already know it’s going to be an epic season.

ALEX FOUGERE WINS RACE TWO, GLEN COLLINSON 2ND, PETER BENNET CLAIMS FIRST PODIUM FOR 3RD

In a thrilling 10-lapper, Alex Fougere won Race Two of the PTS Logistics V8 Utes action at Manfield.

Starting deep in the field in 7th, Alex had a great start getting around Blair Gribble-Bowring to secure 3rd, leaving his father Paul up front and Geoff Spencer in 2nd.

But by the end of lap one, Alex had dispatched Geoff then passed his father to lead coming into lap two. Meanwhile, Peter Bennett was showing his race craft. In just his second race in a V8 Ute, after starting 4th, he was up to 2nd place by lap two. The race was on.

Glen Collinson meanwhile was carving up the field, leap-frogging from 8th to start challenging Peter Bennett by lap three. Then, we got two witness two skilled warhorses battle it out, lap after lap. Glen eventually moved past the rapid Peter around turn two on the on seventh lap. He then set out in pursuit of Alex, but the wily Holden racer wasn’t relenting and held his lead to the chequered flag.

Meanwhile a little further back, a tense battle between Geoff, Stu and Paul just a second apart saw Paul Fougere overtake St Monteith late in the race for 6th place, Geoff Spencer clinging onto 5th.

After the race, an elated Alex emerged from the CORE Holden fists in the air. “Great to have the family here, thanks to Dan (Ludlam), great race.” It’s another podium in the bag for Glen Collinson. While for Peter Bennet, at the end of the race he too was ecstatic, “1st podium in the 1st weekend is pretty cool”. We think your racing was pretty cool too Peter.

Now it’s all eyes on Race Three mid-afternoon.

GLEN TRUMPS ALEX FOR RACE ONE WIN AT MANFEILD

If this is the sort of racing we can look forward to, Season 26/27 is set to be a bolter. Glen Collison prevailed over Alex Fougere – by a mere 1.6 seconds at the finish, while Geoff Spencer and debutant Peter Bennett kept us entertained all race long with their scrap for 4th.

The afternoon’s Race One grid positions had been settled by a marble draw. Fast Fords Glen Collinson & Peter Bennett drew the back row of the grid, with 2nd fastest Blair Gribble Bowring ending up 4th on the grid. Fastest Holden Alex Fougere was right up front, with Bruce McRae alongside.

When the lights went out, Alex Fougere leapt away retaining the lead, while Glen Collinson propelled the Fix Auto Collision Ford from 7th to 2nd within the first two corners. Blair Gribble-Bowring didn’t have to move far to sn**ch 3rd. For newcomer Peter Bennett, life wasn’t to be so easy. Showing impressive pace, he was into 5th by the end of Lap One, tucking in behind Geoff Spencer.

Up front, former champion Glen Collinson soon found a way past Alex Fougere to claim the lead, but Alex wasn’t about to let him get away easily. Equally tenacious was Geoff Spencer, who knows every twist and turn of Manfeild being his local circuit, blocking Peter Bennett for 4th.

It was the first race in a V8 ute for Peter Bennett in the striking yellow/black Terra Cat-backed Ford FG who raced cat and mouse with Geoff. Then on Lap 8 Geoff missed a gear and Peter claimed the place. A few corners later, Peter also missed a gear, Geoff returned serve, re-claimed 4th place and hung onto it until the end.

Meanwhile up front Glen Collinson retained the lead to the chequered flag, but a creditable performance from Alex Fougere - in only his first outing in the CORE Holden ute - finished a mere 1.6 seconds behind the former champion. Blair Gribble-Bowring finished less than 6 seconds behind Alex.

For the PTS Logistics V8 Utes, Sunday’s racing begins with a reverse-grid Race Two mid-morning, then Race Three will decide the round winner Sunday afternoon.

TWO WINS OUT OF THREE FOR DANIEL LUDLAM
Race Three capped off a breakthrough weekend for Daniel Ludlam. After his first ever win, Daniel backs it up with another race win. And to cap it all off, he wins the round. Hard Core.

While Glen Collinson started on pole, he was immediately challenged by Daniel Ludlam who was ahead by Lap Two. It didn’t last. Glen soon took back the lead, but below the surface, trouble was brewing.

A little further back, Mitch Sparrow was charging up from last and up to 6th by the third lap. But it was tight. Barely 2 seconds separated the top six places.

Then it all changed. On lap four, Glen’s Ford was in trouble. The tooth fairy visited his gearbox, all he had was third gear, and his opportunist adversaries streamed past.

By lap six, Daniel has holding onto the lead, Brad Kroef was 2nd, Phill Ross & Mitch Sparrow were scrapping out for 3rd – trading places but not paint. This was close but clean racing.

A the chequered flag, Daniel was the winner, Brad bagged more valuable points for 2nd , and set the fastest lap. Phill Ross prevailed over Mitch Sparrow for 3rd. Gripping stuff. This is going to be one exciting season.

MAIDEN WIN FOR DANIEL LUDLAM

After starting 8th, Daniel Ludlam stormed through for a hard-fought win, with Glen Collinson over 8 secs back in 2nd and Cam Vernon 3rd. Greg Kroef put in a great race moving up from his 7th start position to finish 4th. Phill Ross kept a cool head and a heavy right foot accelerating up 4 spots from 9th to 5th.

Daniel’s race was maturely managed, as he slipped through the midfield corner after corner. When he hit the lead on the third lap, he sprinted away, enjoying the unfamiliar luxury of a clear track ahead, and continued to stretch his lead lap after lap.

Meanwhile, Glen Collinson was on a charge and was hassling Cam Vernon for 2nd by the fith lap. Cam managed to keep ahead of the V8 utes veteran, until eventually relenting late in the race.

The race wasn’t so good for Mitch Sparrow, coming off the track and his left front suspension coming off second best. Right now, Mitch and his crew are replacing a broken shock absorber. It’s looking good for them to be ready for Race Three this afternoon.

The gang is back for a new season....

BRAD KROEF WINS, COLLINSON 2nd, SPARROW FLIES INTO 3rd
Brad Kroef triumphed again but it’s already evident he’ll have to work harder this season. With so many new factors – a rookie driver, a new ute and the NI Sixes right behind them, Race One was going to answer a lot of questions.

Rookie Mitch Sparrow mounted a serious challenge the whole race. Sparrow flew around Kroef on turn one, lap one, from there it was game on. Just behind them, Glen Collinson eventually got Daniel Ludlam and was ready to pounce.

Phill Ross had a great start leaping from 7th to 4th all on the first lap, also getting around Daniel Ludlam. Lap after lap the leaders were separated by barely a second. Then they encountered lapped traffic catching passing the NI Sixes.

Collinson sn**ched 2nd when Sparrow went wide on the final turn into the main straight late in the race. That’s how the final podium places finished with Phill Ross a comfortable 4th . Also on a great charge Jeremy Hunt moved up from 12th to finish 9th. Great driving.

Clearly, Mitch Sparrow is taking the pressure in his stride. After the race he confessed, “It was a wide blue ute up in front, “ referring to Brad Kroef’s defensive driving skills holding onto in the lead. “But it was fun.”

With a reverse grid Race Two tomorrow, prepare for another overtaking exhibition.
