I have tuned some interesting projects in my time -this is definitely one of them.
This is a Turbocharged 14 cylinder radial engine.
12L capacity with 2 rows of 7 cylinders in each row. It is 4 valve per cylinder so 56 valves & twin spark so 28 ignition coils & spark plugs.
Russell used Yamaha barrels & cylinder heads for the build & had a custom crank, conrods, & crank case made.

For engine management a Motec M150 was used for proper data logging, engine protection & advanced features to control something oddball like this.

It definitely moved A LOT of air.

Full wiring loom & electronics set up for a carburetted race car.
Just because it is carburetted doesn’t mean we can’t have engine protection & other modern features – but you need the right hardware to do it. The Life Racing PDUx2b does what no other power distribution unit can do in this regard and especially in a stand alone application like this.

The PDU’s inputs can also be used as sensor inputs (which also makes it a handy expander for EFI setups), and in this case with a single coolant temp & oil pressure temp sensors we are able to provide intelligent engine protection, control coolant fans, activate warning lights and as a bonus directly drive the Stack gauges.

The very powerful custom logic means we can do automated functions like auto start, auto fuel pump activate & reserve pump manual/auto activate, while the fully customisable CAN bus means we can send the relevant data to the video camera for recording.

Another set of wheel speed sensors ready to be shipped to the next Motorsport ABS install.
The system requires active wheel speed sensors & in most cases these BMW sensors lend them selves to easy adaption into various cars. As part of the custom programming to suit your car we can program it for the number of teeth on your car.

If that proves not possible we can supply an adaptor box that converts the signal from your existing wheel speed sensors into a suitable signal for the Motorsport ABS system.

Last loom for the year was a big one.
Finished off the year with a large loom for a Historic racing car that also had to be road legal which resulted in extra wiring for lights, indicators, horns & everything else for a WOF.
Keeping it period correct meant lots of circuit breakers, relays and gauges.

Autosport Technology is the exclusive New Zealand dealer for ATE MK60 Motorsort ABS systems for your racecar.

We can supply these for significantly less than other options on the market. We also offer custom motorsport stand alone wiring looms for these or built it into your new wiring loom.

We have installed one of these units in the Autosport Technology RX7 racecar as well as Simon Barrys RX7 FD3 race car. Simon has made significant lap time gains via huge braking gains with the system both in late braking & passing performance, and a big rise in braking G-force as well as completely eliminating the possibility of destroying tyres from brake locks.

The system is custom programmed to suit the brake & suspension specifications for your racecar.

With good data logging systems it can provide via CAN bus data logging for wheel speeds, brake pressures, vehicle yaw rate & diagnostics to evaluate braking performance.

Looking sharp & all teched up.
Simon Barry’s revamped RX7 FD3 looked great & showed great pace at the Osca Levels round last weekend.
The car has been fully Stripped & repainted/rebuilt over the last winter. Simon also took the opportunity to give it a technology birthday at the same time.
To take advantage of best in the business traction control, gearshift control, boost strategies, engine protection & power distribution Simon installed Life Racing engine management & PDU.
Autosport Technology also supplied the ATE Motorsport ABS system which is integrated with the rest of the system with one of our motorsport looms.

The 2 rotor scored Simons first Osca race win & a second behind the Cameron Jones 3-rotor as well as taking a second of his personal best lap time.

Sub Minute at Levels raceway.
Cameron Jones proved yet again that the Gavin Stewart RX7 FD3 is perhaps the fastest home built racecar in the country by taking his own lap record below the minute mark at Levels Raceway in the weekend.
He also emerged from the Osca round in the unprecedented position of currently leading both the GTRNZ GT1 championship & the Osca championship.

Whats the formula?
It is a package. Obviously Cameron drives it extremely well, but he also has great teamwork behind him with a car that is set up & prepared top notch pre weekend & over the race weekend.
The other part of the formula is a car that is built using the right components to do the job right.
This includes proper motorsport electronics like Life Racing engine management, gearshift control & power distribution.

Advanced Maths Functions to go Faster.
In the example in the screen shot we have used the very powerful Maths functions in the Life Racing data logging software to instantly & clearly display the behavior of a brake pedal box set up.

The scatter plot is the usual brake bias verses front brake pressure. Theoretically this should be a flat straight line of constant front/rear bias for all brake pressures. The twist we have added is using the Maths system to calculate & colour the graph to display if the pressure is increasing (orange = driver is applying the brakes) or decreasing (blue = driver coming off the brakes).

This instantly shows as the brakes are applied the bias is reasonably linear, but as the brakes are released the bias is shifting towards the front.

The behavior of the pedal box can be adjusted to alter the bias to be constant or increase forwards or rearwards with changing brake pressure & this in turn affects how the car turns into the corner.
With out the logging (& the right software to interpret the logging) you are flying blind with these aspects of racecar tuning.

Lots & lots of wiring looms lately and a wide range of them. The smaller one is a simple engine loom for a classic BWM road car while the larger one is a full chassis loom for an FD3 RX7 race car incorporating Life Racing engine management with paddle shift, Life Racing PDU, Motec C125 dash, Apex CAN bus steering wheel, and motorsport ABS.

I did my first EFI Racecar wiring loom back in 1994, and over the past 30 years I have built literally hundreds of looms for a huge range of cars, boats & vehicles and a large range of ECU systems.
