Boom Chick NZ Touring New Zealand on a Boom Mustang ST1 Thunderbird trike. The Boom Mustang ST1 Thunderbird is the trike everyone is talking about.

Inspired by Billy Connolly's Route 66 tour on a trike across America, I've now taken the plunge to start touring New Zealand on a Boom Mustang ST1 Thunderbird. Boom Trikes are manufactured in Germany and imported into New Zealand by NZ Trikes Limited, based right here in Christchurch. Follow me to find out why this Trike is the best on three.

It might have been cold out there today, but the sun was shining. With Winter fast approaching, it seemed only right to make the most of a great day, and head out for quick blast around the region. With not much traffic on the road, loved the blast down SH1 to almost Rakaia. But the call of coffee at Leeston was strong, and had to stop there. Then an amble to Coes Ford and over Gebbies Pass. It’s that time of year where parts of the road no longer see the sun, and the smell of damp forest life is strong. Was going to stop at the Wheatsheaf Tavern, but there must have been a motorcycling event on – hundreds of bikes in the carpark. It was great to see the bikes out, but instead of gate crashing the event, I headed around the bays to Diamond Harbour for coffee and chatted to various curious people about the Boom Mustang.

Road Trip! A quick but fabulous weekend away, staying at the historic Hurunui Hotel (aka country pub built in 1860).

Heading away mid Friday afternoon to beat the Friday night traffic was a good plan, as we sat drinking our beer at 5.00pm watching the traffic flow past us. A detour thorugh Balmoral Reserve and down to the local river on the way to the pub, was a photo opportunity not to be missed.

Saturday morning and it's a day trip to Hanmer Springs and then over the Lewis Pass and through the Victoria Forest to historic Reefton for lunch, before returning back to the pub. Victoria Forest never fails to impress. Driving through the beech forest, with it's fast flowing corners. Trikers bliss. Clicked over 60,000 on the Boom Panther. Had to stop for a photo. How could I not!

Saturday night and we're back at the pub, with camp ground facilities included. Caught up with the fabulous friends, drinking wine, and watching the sun set over the local vineyard before heading inside for a few games of Pool and hearty pub grub.

Short mileage. But far enough away to feel like we've had a great weekend break.

An absolutely spectacular summer's day to join the Plains Motorcycle Club, for a day ride to Kaikoura. Meeting up at BP Pegasus, there was time for coffee, before hitting the road. Arriving in Kaikoura around mid-day we found a new lunch spot at The King Tide Eatery. From there we parted ways, as I wanted to cruise back to Christchurch, to stop and admire the well landscaped new rest areas on the coast, south of Kaikoura.

Another fabulous summer day on the road on Saturday. There have been a few points of interest around Canterbury, that we never seem to have the time to stop at, when heading away.

So today was the day to check out the Book Barn in Chertsey. An amazing warehouse of second-hand books as a destination for any bookworm.

Then onto Ashburton to check out the mural works, both professional and very tagging amateur on an almost derelict shed.

The trip was to include the Scenic Highway from Methven back to Darfield, before returning to Christchurch. But the weather had other plans. So, Methven back to Rakaia was the sensible call.

Spotted a burnt-out car in a farmers field and bumped into a triker sista at NPD in Rolleston on the way home. So the unexpected short cut was worth it in the end. Happy days.

Today was an absolutely picture perfect Summer's day to head around the Lyttelton harbour. Headed over to Diamond Harbour for coffee. Then up and over the saddle down to the Old Wharf at Port Levy. We won't mention the shingle road to the mechanic... doh! But let's just say, the trike might need a wash down now.

Last weekend was the perfect opportunity for a solo ride to Arthur’s Pass. Well actually, I was headed for the historic Otira Pub on the west side of the pass but made it as far as the Viaduct before realising the final few kilometres to Otria would have been wet. Turned around at the Viaduct and headed back home. Travelling alone was the perfect opportunity to make random stops for photography. And one unscheduled stop to wipe some form of flying insect off my sunglasses at Castle Hill. Ewww… bug splatter! All in all, another great day on the road. Living the Dream.

The first South Island Trikers Club run for 2022 was a fabulous success, with thanks to Martin for organising; then Stu and Annie for hosting a delicious bar-b-que and man shed tour.

After fueling up, we met as a group, up at the Godley Head carpark. Leaving there to head for Lyttelton, was an obstacle course avoiding cars, sheep, potholes, and cyclists, before enjoying the short twisty road down into Port. From there, it was almost motorway all the way to Rolleston and a westward journey to Darfield for a brief stop.

Second stop was at the Waimakariri River bridge to connect with a couple more trikers and a VW beetle. From there we’re riding through Oxford to Cust, to be surprised with a lavish BBQ put on by Stu and Annie. After lunch, a tour of the man sheds was plenty of entertainment for everyone.

Not a big ride, but definitely fun in the sun, and a chance to catch up with trike mates.

Living the dream, for sure!

A fabulous warm summer’s day for a tiki tour. Today I met up with four gorgeous girls from the Canterbury Woman’s Motorcycling Group and we headed north to the Fossil Café in Greta Valley. Rather than take SH1 all the way we detoured off at SH7, then up Scargill Valley Road to Greta Valley. Apart from the splattering of potholes through Scargill and an unsuspecting, and unavoidable dead rabbit sitting in the middle of the road just over a rise – the ride was fun, fast and no dramas to report.

Relaxing in the shade, enjoying the warm afternoon at Fossil Point Café was a great opportunity to get to know each other, and look toward scheduling another ride.

Homeward bound, and typically for me it was the long route. Thought I’d tiki tour along Ram Paddock Road, through the vineyards of the Waipara District, until I met the loose chip and turned around. Some very scenic views over the Waipara River in areas, and of course the vineyards with the rolling green hills in the background always impresses. Who wouldn’t want to drink wine from an area this scenic?

With the mercury reached 27.8 degrees it was such fun to be back in light riding gear, and away from the multiple winter layers. With a squished-up helmet face, and helmet hair to match, what’s not to love about a day on the road. Roll on Summer.

Giving a BIG shout out to the Plains Motorcycle Club for organising an overnight ride to Kurow. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, many of this seasons rallies are being cancelled. The solution. Some quick overnighters with less than 100 people is the answer. And this was a well organised weekend away. Thanks guys!

Meeting up at Rolleston BP we headed south to Ashburton before cutting inland from Hinds through to Geraldine, where a stretch of legs was appreciated. Onto Fairlie, and of course a stop at the famous Fairlie Bakery for a quality pie.

Fighting the gale winds from Burkes Pass to Tekapo, and a photo stop at Lake Tekapo calmed the nerves for some riders, before riding onto Omarama for the last stretch of legs and petrol. Then we were onto Kurow, staying at the Camp Ground. Group dinner at the Waikati Hotel was a welcome feed, before calling it a night.

Sunday morning, and it's breakfast in Kurow, before heading through the Waimate Gorge (oh, such fun twisty road); a quick stop at the Waihao Forks Hotel to admire the new bronze statue of Ted d’Auvergne; and back onto State Highway One heading home. Coffee stops at Timaru and Rolleston didn't extend the day too far, and we avoided the worst of the rain.

A great 600km weekend escape, with like minds.

BABES ON BIKES - DAY FIVE:
450km route from Clyde back home. Unfortunately the real world beckons, and it's time to head home, but not before checking out Lake Dunstan and Butchers Dam.

It was a picture perfect sunny day, and we were spoilt with virtually no traffic over the Lindis Pass, with no brakes required on that run! Stopped at the Wrinkly Ram in Omarama for lunch, before being treated to a spectacular sight of Aoraki / Mt Cook on the way through to Tekapo, Geradline and then home via SH1.

Due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions, there was virtually no traffic on the road. It's tough trading for those in retail and tourism, but for those of us who love to ride - an epic clear road to enjoy! Loved every minute of the ride home (hence few photos, didn't want the fun to stop).

BABES ON BIKES - DAY FOUR:
88km route from Ranfurly to Clyde. Just a short skip along State Highway 85 to Clyde. We enjoy staying in Clyde for the historic township and great eating places. With a big night on Saturday night, this Sunday was just a second leisure day to recharge before the final big ride home on Monday. Taking a walk around the Clyde township, stopping for some retail therapy, a visit to the Post Office Cafe to listen to live music with a glass or two of bubbles, and then finishing with dinner at Paulina's - did not disappoint.

BABES ON BIKES - DAY THREE:
Tiki tour day around Ranfurly, then over to Naseby for lunch, with the main Babes on Bikes catch up event scheduled from 5.00pm at the Ranfurly Hotel. A few pictures from around Ranfurly and Naseby, again showcasing what you can find, off the main highway.
