Heading out this summer? Before you hit the road, do these five checks:

✅ Tyre tread
NZ’s legal minimum is 1.5mm, but anything under 3mm affects grip. To check you can use a 20c coin – if you can see the full “20” your tread’s too low.

✅ Oil level
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it, dip again, then check the mark. Low? Top it up.

✅ Wiper blades
Test your blades, if they smear, squeak or miss patches, replace them.

✅ Washer fluid
Open the cap under the bonnet – if it’s empty, fill with water and a splash of screen wash.

✅ Spare tyre pumped?
You've hopefully got one, but is it in good condition? Make sure it's not cracked or worn, and that it's pumped to the right pressure.

Takes 5 minutes – saves hours on the roadside.

Your tyres might look fine… but how’s the tread?

In New Zealand, the minimum legal tread depth is 1.5 mm across ¾ of the tyre’s width. But waiting until you hit that limit isn’t worth the risk. Below 3 mm, tyres start losing grip fast, especially in the wet, when worn tread can’t clear water properly and stopping distances get longer.

Good tread means better handling, shorter braking distances, and stronger grip when it matters most. And with long summer road trips ahead, where the weather can quickly swing from hot highways to sudden downpours, it’s worth making sure your tyres are ready for whatever the weather throws at you.
