Just prior to Christmas we managed to take the 1914 'baby' Triumph motorcycle we posted about in November for a short ride. The bike has no kickstart nor of course an electric start so to start the bike you have to sit astride it and 'paddle' it along in gear. There is no clutch either so once it starts you are off! Throttle and mixture are controlled by levers on the handle bars along with advance and re**rd of the timing. So once you have it running there is plenty to think about as you are moving along, stopping is another story. The rear primary brake is a rubber block that rubs on the belt rim. The front brake is more like a push bike with 2 rubber blocks rubbing on the rim. However its such a lightweight construction the first use of the brake would see it tied in knots. Most 'Baby Triumphs are consequently missing the front brake as this bike was. We were able to find some drawings and patterns for the front brake and we built it from scratch so the bike looked complete.
Times traffic and speeds were different in 1914 and to take it out in todays traffic would be an experience

First run of this engine

18/11/2025

Currently we are restoring a Jaguar XK140 roadster for a local customer. The engine had been rebuilt by another firm but had never been run. Unfortunately by the time we received the engine many parts were missing so much time has been spent sourcing and rebuilding many of the engine ancillaries such as the carburetors and the distributor. After fitting the engine to our test bed the engine was started and run for the first time yesterday.
